Figure 4.2: Flat ceiling and slanted ceiling
The detector must always be mounted in the centre of the
ceiling with a minimum distance of 0.5m from the walls.
The build-up of air near to walls and, particularly in the corners
of a room, stops the smoke from rising to this area. A smoke
detector installed in this area may raise the alarm too late.
In rooms with a slanted ceiling, the smoke detector must not be
installed within the slanted area. A build-up of air right beneath
the roof also stops the smoke from rising. The smoke detector
must be mounted with a minimum distance of 1m from the
room’s highest point, for example, on a roof beam.
Unsuitable locations for installation
In order to safeguard against false alarms, do not install the
detector in the following rooms or locations:
Kitchen/bathroom (steam)
Rooms with open fireplaces (fume)
In the immediate vicinity of halogen lamps, transformers or
halogen lamp cable systems, as well as fluorescent lamps
or energy-saving lamps (keep 50 cm minimum distance)
Garages (exhaust fumes)
Dusty and dirty rooms
In the vicinity of windows, ventilators, fans or any other
locations where the air moves around a lot
