Overview

The Worcester Greenstar FS 30 & FS 42CDi Regular is a floor-standing, gas-fired, condensing regular boiler designed for use in sealed or open-vent central heating systems. This user manual provides comprehensive instructions and customer care guidance to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the appliance.

Function Description

The boiler's primary function is to provide central heating for domestic properties. As a condensing boiler, it operates with high energy efficiency, recovering heat from the flue gases that would otherwise be lost. This process results in the production of condensate, which is regularly discharged via a trap and pipe to drain. The boiler is designed to provide a high level of comfort while minimizing gas consumption and environmental impact. It achieves this through modulating control, where the gas supply to the burner is regulated according to the heat demand. This allows the boiler to operate with a low flame during periods of reduced demand, leading to more even heat distribution and lower gas usage compared to boilers that frequently cycle on and off.

The appliance is suitable for use with both Natural Gas (NG) and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), categorized as Cat II 2H3P TYPE C13, C33, C53 & C93. Specific GC numbers are provided for both NG and LPG models, ensuring compatibility and correct installation.

Usage Features

The boiler's controls are designed for ease of use, located behind a cover panel that can be accessed by pulling its center top. Key controls include:

  • Master Switch for On/Off (A): This switch powers the appliance on or off. A blue indicator light (B) illuminates when the boiler is on.
  • Mains On/Off Indicator + Fault Diagnostic Light (B): This light indicates the boiler's power status and flashes in conjunction with the reset button during a fault condition.
  • Central Heating Temperature Control (C): A knob allows users to set the desired central heating flow temperature, ranging from 35 °C to 88 °C. Approximate temperature settings are provided for guidance.
  • Burner On Indicator Light (Green) (D): This light illuminates when the burner is active.
  • Fault Reset Button (E): Used to clear fault conditions. When a fault occurs, this button flashes along with the mains indicator, and a fault code is displayed (H). Pressing the reset button attempts to clear the fault.
  • Display (H): Shows fault codes and, during initial startup or after a mains interruption, alternates between '-II-' and the central heating flow temperature for 15 minutes as the boiler fills its condensate trap.
  • Central Heating Boost Button (J): Provides a temporary boost to the central heating.

For optimal central heating control, the boiler should be used in conjunction with external controls such as a room thermostat and a programmer. The room thermostat helps maintain a desired room temperature, while the programmer allows scheduling of heating times. Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) should be fitted to all radiators except one (preferably in the same room as the room thermostat) to allow individual room temperature control.

Frost Protection: The boiler incorporates a frost protection feature. If the master switch is left on and the central heating temperature control is set to the frost protection symbol, the boiler will fire automatically if the internal temperature drops to 5 °C, preventing freezing. For enhanced protection, especially in remote pipework, a suitable anti-freeze fluid can be added to the central heating system, and an external frost thermostat may be installed by the installer.

Pump Anti-Seizure: To prevent the system pump from seizing during long periods of inactivity (e.g., in summer), the boiler will automatically run the pump for a few seconds if there has been no heating demand for 24 hours.

Maintenance Features

Regular servicing is crucial for maintaining the boiler's economy, safety, and reliability. The boiler must be serviced by a competent, qualified person, such as a Worcester service engineer or a GAS SAFE registered professional. The use of original spare parts is recommended.

The Benchmark Scheme, of which Worcester, Bosch Group is a licensed member, promotes high standards of installation, commissioning, and servicing. Installers are required to complete a Benchmark Checklist, which includes a service interval record, after installation and each subsequent service. This checklist serves as important documentation for warranty claims and Building Regulations compliance.

Fault Finding: The manual includes a fault-finding table to assist users in diagnosing basic operating system problems. This table lists common issues, their probable causes, and suggested remedies. If a fault persists or cannot be resolved by the user, contacting Worcester, Bosch Group's Technical Support or Service Department is advised, providing any displayed fault codes.

Clearances: Adequate space around the boiler is necessary for safety and servicing access. The manual provides diagrams illustrating minimum clearances for both unventilated compartments and airing cupboards, emphasizing that these spaces should not be restricted by additional cupboards or shelves.

Condensate Drain: Users are reminded that the condensate pipe must not be blocked or altered, as this is a normal function of a condensing boiler.

Health & Safety: The boiler is free from asbestos and substances that contravene COSHH Regulations. Users are warned against modifying the flue system or any part of the boiler, as this could invalidate the warranty and pose safety risks. In case of a gas smell, strict safety protocols are outlined, including immediate cessation of electrical activity, ventilation, and contacting the gas company or National Grid Emergency Services.

Guarantee: The boiler comes with a 2-year guarantee against faulty material or workmanship, subject to terms and conditions, including the return of a Guarantee Registration Card within 30 days of purchase and evidence of correct installation and servicing (via the Benchmark Checklist). The guarantee applies to equipment purchased and used in the United Kingdom and Eire and does not affect statutory rights.
