The Breville Duo-Temp Pro (BES810) is an espresso machine designed for household use, offering a range of features to help users create quality coffee. It incorporates several technologies to ensure optimal temperature control and extraction, along with functionalities for texturing milk.
Function Description
The primary function of the Breville Duo-Temp Pro is to extract espresso and texture milk for various coffee beverages. It utilizes a Thermocoil heating system with Electronic PID temperature control to maintain stable water temperature, crucial for consistent espresso extraction. An auto-purge function automatically adjusts water temperature after steaming to ensure the optimal temperature for subsequent espresso extraction, preventing the ground coffee from being burnt by excessively hot water. The machine also features low-pressure pre-infusion, which gradually increases water pressure at the beginning of the extraction process. This gentle pre-infusion helps to expand the coffee grinds evenly, leading to a more balanced and consistent extraction.
For milk-based drinks, the machine is equipped with a swivel steam wand, allowing users to texture milk. It has a dedicated steam function, and also a hot water function for Americanos or pre-heating cups. The control dial on the front panel allows users to select between espresso, steam, and hot water functions.
Usage Features
- Machine Preparation and First Use: Before initial use, all packaging materials and labels should be removed. Parts like the water tank, portafilter, filter baskets, and milk jug should be cleaned with warm, soapy water. The water filter, located in the water tank, needs to be conditioned by soaking and rinsing before installation, and its replacement date should be set. The machine requires a flushing operation without coffee before first use to condition it.
- Water Tank: The removable 1.8L water tank is filled from the top and includes integrated water filtration. It should be filled with fresh, cold tap water daily before each use.
- Coffee Preparation: The machine accommodates both freshly ground and pre-ground coffee. Single wall filter baskets are provided for freshly ground coffee, allowing for experimentation with grind, dose, and tamp. Dual wall filter baskets are designed for pre-ground coffee, regulating pressure for optimal extraction and crema regardless of grind or tamp pressure.
- Dosing and Tamping: Users are guided to fill the filter basket with ground coffee, tap it down to collapse the coffee, and then tamp firmly with the integrated tamper (approximately 15-20kg of pressure). Consistent pressure is important. The top edge of the tamper's metal cap should be level with the top of the filter basket after tamping to ensure correct dosing. Excess coffee should be wiped from the rim of the filter basket to ensure a proper seal.
- The Razor™ Precision Dose Trimming Tool: This accessory helps to trim the coffee puck to the correct level for a consistent extraction. After tamping, the tool is inserted into the filter basket until its shoulders rest on the rim. Rotating the tool back and forth while holding the portafilter at an angle over a knock box trims off excess coffee.
- Extraction: To extract espresso, the portafilter is inserted and locked into the group head. Turning the Control Dial to the 'Espresso' position initiates the brewing process. The machine recommends approximately 30 seconds of extraction. For optimal flavor, 30ml is recommended for a 1 CUP filter and 60ml for a 2 CUP filter. The low-pressure pre-infusion feature gently expands the grinds before full pressure extraction.
- Texturing Milk: The swivel steam wand is used for texturing milk. It's recommended to purge the steam wand before inserting it into the milk. The process involves stretching the milk to aerate it and then swirling it to create a silky smooth texture. The steam tip should be inserted 1-2cm below the surface, close to the right side of the jug, to create a vortex. The milk is at the correct temperature (60-65°C) when the jug is hot to touch. After texturing, the steam wand should be purged again and wiped clean.
- Hot Water Function: The machine has a separate hot water function, accessed by pressing the 'SELECT' button and turning the Control Dial to 'Steam'. The spout outlet should be directed towards the drip tray.
- Cup Warming Tray: A cup warming tray is located on top of the machine to help maintain the coffee's optimal temperature.
- Auto Off Mode: The machine automatically switches to AUTO OFF mode after 20 minutes of inactivity.
Maintenance Features
- Water Filter Replacement: The water filter helps prevent scale buildup. It should be replaced every two months, or more frequently in hard water areas. The process involves soaking, rinsing, setting the date dial, and installing the new filter.
- Portafilter Cleaning: Periodically, water should be run through the machine with the portafilter in place, but without ground coffee, to rinse out residual coffee particles.
- Machine Cleaning Cycle: To remove residual grinds and oil buildup, a cleaning cycle should be performed every 2-3 months using the provided cleaning tablet. This involves inserting a silicon disk and cleaning tablet into the portafilter, locking it into the group head, and running the 'Espresso' function repeatedly until the tablet dissolves.
- Descaling: Even with a water filter, scale buildup can occur. A descaling procedure is recommended when there is scale buildup in the water tank. This involves mixing a descaling solution with warm water, pouring it into the water tank, and running it through both the group head and steam wand. After descaling, the machine should be rinsed with fresh cold water.
- Steam Wand Cleaning: After each use, the steam wand should be run to clear milk, wiped with a damp cloth, and the hole cleaned with a pin. The tip can be removed and soaked overnight for a thorough clean.
- Filter Basket Cleaning: If the holes in the filter baskets become blocked, they can be cleared with a pin. For a thorough clean, the filters can be soaked overnight in hot water with a cleaning tablet.
- Outer Housing and Cup Warming Plate Cleaning: These surfaces can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and then polished with a soft, dry cloth. Abrasive cleansers should be avoided.
- Drip Tray Cleaning: The drip tray should be removed, emptied, and cleaned regularly with warm soapy water. The drip tray base and cover are dishwasher safe.
- Storage Tray Cleaning: The storage tray, located behind the drip tray, can be removed and cleaned with a soft, damp cloth.
- Storage: When storing the machine, it should be switched off, unplugged, and all accessories inserted into position or the storage tray. The machine should be stored upright.
