If the uneonfined space is within a building of
unusually tight construction, air for combustion, ven¬
tilation, and draft hood dilution shall be obtained
from outdoors or from spaces freely communicating
with the outdoors. Under these conditions a per¬
manent opening or openings having a total free area
of not less than one square inch per 5,000 Btuh of
total input rating of all appliances shall be provided.
Ducts used to convey makeup air from the outdoors
shall be of the same cross-sectional area as the free
area of the openings to which they connect Such ducts
connected to the outside air only may be connected, to
the cold air return of the heating system. The
minimum dimension of rectangular air ducts shall be
not less than 3 inches.
All air from inside building:
The confined space shall be provided with two per¬
manent openings, one near the top of the enclosure
and one near the bottom, Each opening shall have a (
free area of not less than one square inch per 1,000 V,-
Btuh of the total input rating of all appliances in the
enclosure, freely communicating with interior areas
having in turn adequate infiltration from the outside.
