Do you have a question about the Campbell Hausfeld WL6701 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document serves as an operating instructions and parts manual for the Campbell Hausfeld "The Ultimate Portable Garage Air Compressor," models WL6701 and WL6703. It is designed for do-it-yourselfers for various home and automotive tasks, including powering spray guns, impact wrenches, and other air tools. A key characteristic of these compressors is their oilless operation.

Technical Specifications:

The WL6701 and WL6703 models feature a running horsepower of 1.7 (ISO 1217). They deliver a Free Air CFM of 3.8 @ 90 psi (ISO 1217) and 5.6 @ 40 psi (ISO 1217). Tank capacities are available in 18, 22, 26, or 30 gallons. The units operate on 120 V, single-phase power with an amp draw of 15 and a maximum duty cycle of 50%. Users are advised to record the model and serial numbers, located on the back of the tank, and the date of purchase for future reference.

Usage Features:

The compressor is equipped with several user-friendly features. The "Click-To-Set Regulator Knob" controls the air pressure delivered to air tools or spray guns, with clockwise rotation increasing pressure and counterclockwise rotation decreasing it. Turning the knob fully counterclockwise shuts off air flow. The regulator is designed to rotate approximately 270 degrees, and continuous turning past the minimum operation setting (zero psi) may cause the knob to loosen. The "Outlet (Tool) Pressure Gauge" displays the current air pressure at the outlet in psi, and users should ensure it reads zero before changing tools or disconnecting hoses. The "Tank Pressure Gauge" indicates the pressure inside the tank, confirming proper compressor operation.

A "Foot Pedal ON/OFF Switch" allows for easy power control. The compressor also includes "Storage Trays" on top for convenient tool storage, with specific Campbell Hausfeld tool kits designed to fit these areas. For mobility, a "Wheel Lock/Foot Brake" is provided; users lift the lever with their foot to disengage and push down to engage the brake.

A notable feature is the "Rapid Inflation Technology™ (RIT)," which allows air from the compressor pump to go directly to the recoil hose, bypassing the tank fill-up time for significantly faster inflation. This mode is suitable for general inflation tasks. When using RIT, the instant air hose will get hot.

The compressor is suitable for continuous use with inflation accessories, airbrushes, air screwdrivers, brad nailers and staplers, caulk guns, engine cleaners, finish nailers, grease guns, home spray guns, impact wrenches, ratchets, reciprocating saws, and roofing and framing nailers. For intermittent use (short powerful bursts), it can power air chisels, air drills, automotive spray guns, and die grinders. Tools not recommended include cut-off tools, dual action sanders, high-speed sanders, jitterbug sanders, and straight-line sanders.

Safety Guidelines:

The manual emphasizes several safety precautions. Users are warned about the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons. It is crucial to read all instructions, be familiar with controls, and follow all local electrical and safety codes. The compressor should never be used to supply breathing quality air without suitable in-line safety and alarm equipment, as existing warranties would be voided. The work area must be clean, well-lighted, and free of bystanders, children, and flammable materials. Personal safety measures include wearing ANSI Z87 eye protection, hearing protection, and an OSHA-approved dust mask, as well as dressing properly and keeping hands away from moving parts.

Electrical safety is paramount; the unit must always be disconnected from the power source before servicing, which should only be performed by an authorized service center. Plastic (PVC) pipe should never be used for compressed air. The compressed air system and electrical components should be inspected before each use for damage or leaks. The safety relief valve must never be removed or adjusted, and the tank should never be repaired or modified by welding or drilling, as this can weaken it and lead to rupture or explosion.

Installation:

The compressor should be installed in a clean, well-ventilated area where the ambient temperature does not exceed 100°F, with a minimum clearance of 18 inches from walls. The air inlet should not be near steam, paint spray, sandblast areas, or other sources of contamination. Electrical installation must be performed by a qualified electrician according to local and national codes. Extension cords are not recommended; additional air hose should be used instead to avoid power loss. The unit requires a nominal 120-volt circuit with a grounding plug, and users are warned against improper grounding or modifying the plug.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the compressor's longevity and safe operation. The ASME safety valve should be checked periodically by pulling its ring; if it leaks or fails to close automatically, it must be replaced. The tank should be drained daily to remove condensation, which can cause corrosion. The "Easy Drain Knob" facilitates this process. The unit is oilless and does not require lubrication.

The air filter should be checked regularly and cleaned or replaced if necessary. To access the filter, the unit needs to be tipped back, resting on its wheels and handle. The compressor is equipped with an automatic reset thermal overload protector that shuts off the motor if it overheated. Frequent activation of this protector may indicate low voltage or insufficient ventilation. If activated, the motor must be allowed to cool down before restarting. Torque requirements for piston bolts are 350-450 in. lbs. and for head bolts are 90-120 in. lbs.

The manual also includes a troubleshooting guide for common issues like the compressor not running, fuses blowing, tank pressure drops, low air output, excessive moisture, and continuous running. A service record section is provided for users to log maintenance performed and replacement components required.
