Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the Caple Built-in 50/50 Fridge Freezer, model RI5506. It provides comprehensive information on the safe installation, use, and maintenance of the appliance, along with useful advice for optimizing its performance. The manual emphasizes that the appliance is designed for household use and not for commercial purposes, and it outlines specific environments where its use is not intended, such as staff kitchen areas, bed and breakfast establishments, hotels, motels, and other residential-type environments.

Function Description

The Caple RI5506 is a built-in 50/50 fridge freezer, meaning it has equally sized refrigerator and freezer compartments. Its primary function is to store food items, keeping them fresh in the refrigerator section and frozen in the freezer section. The appliance incorporates Frost Free Technology, which distinguishes it from static refrigerators. In a Frost Free system, a built-in fan circulates dry and cold air evenly throughout both the cooler and freezer compartments. This uniform air dispersion prevents humidity and frost build-up, eliminating the need for manual defrosting of the freezer compartment. This technology enhances ease of use and contributes to the appliance's overall capacity and stylish appearance.

The refrigerator compartment is designed to store fresh food and beverages, while the freezer compartment is used for storing frozen food, freezing fresh food, and making ice cubes. The appliance features a control panel with a temperature set button, a Super cooling mode LED, an alarm indicator LED, and a temperature setting indicator, allowing users to manage and monitor the internal temperature.

A key feature is the "Caple Fresh" (Maxi-fresh preserver) technology, which aims to extend the shelf life of fresh foods, particularly green vegetables. This system works by eliminating ethylene gas, a by-product of fresh foods, from the vegetable drawer and also helps to block unpleasant odors within the refrigerator.

The appliance also includes a humidity-controlled drawer, specifically designed for storing fruits and vegetables. This drawer allows users to control the humidity level, which helps to prolong the freshness and endurance life of produce.

Usage Features

Before initial use, the manual advises cleaning all parts with a solution of warm water and sodium bicarbonate, followed by rinsing and drying. All transport tapes and foam protection pieces should be removed, and the interior cleaned with lukewarm soap and water. It's normal for the appliance to emit an odor when first operated, which will dissipate as it cools. After positioning, the feet should be adjusted to ensure stability, which is crucial for quiet operation and proper door opening/closing. A critical warning states that after connecting to the electrical socket, the appliance should not be switched on for at least 12 hours to allow the coolant to settle, preventing adverse effects on cooling performance.

The temperature set button on the control panel allows users to adjust the fridge freezer's temperature. Pressing the button cycles through temperature settings, decreasing the temperature with each press. The Super cooling mode can be activated by pressing the temperature set button until its symbol blinks on the display. This mode is ideal for cooling/freezing large quantities of food, fresh food quickly, or for storing seasonal food for extended periods. For optimal performance, it's recommended to activate Super Cooling mode 5 hours before placing fresh food in the fridge. This mode automatically cancels after 5 hours or can be manually cancelled by pressing the temperature set button again.

The manual provides detailed instructions for food storage. Liquids should be stored in sealed containers to reduce humidity and frost formation. Warm food should be cooled to room temperature before being placed in the refrigerator to ensure adequate air circulation. Items should not be in direct contact with the rear wall to prevent frost build-up. Frequent door openings should be avoided. Meat and clean fish are best stored loosely wrapped on the glass shelf above the vegetable bin. Loose fruits and vegetables should be stored in the crisper containers, separating ethylene-sensitive vegetables from ethylene-releaser fruits. Wet vegetables should not be placed in the refrigerator. To prevent cross-contamination, meat products should not be stored with fruits and vegetables, and any leakages from meat should be cleaned promptly. Packaged foods should be consumed before their recommended expiry date.

For the freezer compartment, users are advised to ensure maximum contact between fresh food and the cooling surface for efficient freezing. Fresh food should not be stored next to frozen food to prevent thawing. Portions of fresh food should be divided before freezing. Thawed food should be consumed quickly and not re-frozen unless cooked. Warm food should never be placed in the freezer. Manufacturer's instructions on food packaging regarding storage duration should be followed, typically not exceeding 3 months if no information is provided. When purchasing frozen food, ensure it's stored under appropriate conditions and packaging is undamaged. Frozen food should be transported and placed in the freezer as soon as possible. Signs of humidity or abnormal swelling in packaging indicate unsuitable storage temperatures and potential deterioration. The storage life of frozen food is influenced by room temperature, thermostat setting, door opening frequency, food type, and transport time. The appliance label indicates the maximum amount of fresh food that can be frozen in 24 hours. To maximize freezer capacity, glass shelves can be used for upper and middle sections, and the lower basket for the bottom section.

The adjustable door shelf feature allows users to customize shelf height. To adjust, hold the bottom of the shelf, pull the button on each end to unlock, move the shelf to one of the 6 available height positions, and then release the buttons to lock it. The shelf should be empty before adjustment.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the appliance's efficiency and longevity. Before any cleaning or maintenance, the appliance must be disconnected from the power supply. The manual explicitly states not to wash the appliance by pouring water on it and to avoid abrasive products, detergents, or soaps. Cleaning should be done with a solution of bicarbonate of soda and lukewarm water. After washing, rinse with clean water and dry carefully before reconnecting the plug. Care must be taken to prevent water from entering the lamp housing and other electrical components. Accessories should be cleaned separately by hand with soap and water, not in a dishwasher. The condenser should be cleaned with a brush at least twice a year to save energy and increase productivity.

The refrigerator compartment performs automatic defrosting. The defrost water flows into a vaporisation container behind the refrigerator and evaporates. This container should be cleaned at specific time intervals with soapy water to prevent odors. To do this, the refrigerator plug must be disconnected, and the container removed by unscrewing it.

The Caple Fresh filter needs to be cleaned once a year. This can be done by leaving it in sunlight for one day. When cleaning the filter, it should be removed by pulling the back side in the direction of the arrow, and it should not be wetted with water or detergent.

For replacing LED lighting, users are advised to contact Caple service, as this should only be performed by a qualified electrician.

The manual also provides guidance for holidays. For short holidays (less than three weeks), the fridge freezer can remain operating. For long holidays (several months), all items should be removed, the appliance turned off, cleaned, and dried thoroughly. To prevent odor and mold growth, the door should be left slightly open, blocked if necessary.

Troubleshooting information is provided to help users identify and resolve minor issues before calling for service. This includes checking power supply, door closure, temperature settings, condenser cleanliness, and ventilation space. The manual also explains normal operating noises such as cracking (due to automatic defrosting or expansion/contraction of materials), compressor noise, bubbling noises (refrigerant flow), and water flow noise (defrosting water). It also addresses issues related to food packaging and proper placement of door compartments, shelves, and drawers to ensure proper door closure. If problems persist, users are directed to contact Caple service.

Energy-saving tips are included, such as installing the appliance in a cool, well-ventilated room away from heat sources, allowing warm food to cool before placing it inside, thawing frozen food in the refrigerator compartment, covering drinks and liquids, avoiding frequent or prolonged door openings, keeping temperature compartment covers closed, and ensuring the door gasket is clean and pliable.
