HANDY TIPS FOR THE ELDERLY TO HELP PREVENT SLIPPING, TRIPPING,
STUMBLING AND REDUCING FALLRELATED INJURIES IN THE HOME.
v Place all lamp, extension leads, and telephone cords out of the ow of walking trac areas.
v Make sure all small rugs and carpet runners are slip-resistant and are not dog-eared.
v Place small stoves and heaters where they cannot be knocked over, and away from
furnishings and ammable materials, such as curtains or rugs.
v Make sure that hallways, stairways, passageways between rooms, and other
heavy trac areas are well lit.
v Ensure exits and passageways are clear, so that there is nothing to stumble over.
v Equip your bathrooms and showers with non-skid mats.
v Wet areas are one of the most common places for accidents.
v Install at least one, but preferably two, grab rails in your bathroom and shower areas.
v Make sure that the steps in your stairway allow for secure footing, and that the coverings
on the steps are in good condition.
v Be sure that you can clearly see the edges of the steps, and do not store anything
on the stairway, even temporarily.
v Use a sturdy, step stool to reach high shelves.
v Never stand on chairs, boxes or other makeshift items
v The elderly should wear shoes with non-skid soles and low heels, be careful of
catching clothing or treading on garments.
v Provide adequate lighting for all areas including night lights for bedrooms and bathrooms.
