Thecommonrailhasaninternalvolumesizedtoquicklypressurizethefuelatstartup,whilehavingasufcientvolume
tosupportfullloadfuellingrates.Thevolumeinthecommonrailissufcienttoallowtheinjectorstosupplyfueltothe
cylindersunderfullload,whilestillmaintainingastabilerailpressure,fromfuelsuppliedbythehighpressurepump.
Afuelpressuresensor(3)isscrewedintotheoneendofthecommonrail.Itprovidesfeedbacktotheengineelectronic
controlunitwherethesensorvaluesaremonitored.Railpressureischangedasneededbasedonsensorfeedback
andotherengineoperatingparameters.
Anoverpressurevalve(6)isinstalledintheotherend.Itprotectsthecommonrailandassociatedcomponentsby
exhaustingexcesspressureintherailtothereturnlineandbacktothefueltank.Itopensatabout1850–1950bar
(26825–28275psi).
