Overview

This document describes the operation and maintenance of a Casio watch, model 5686, which features Mobile Link connectivity.

Function Description

The Casio 5686 is a multi-function watch with both analog and digital displays, designed to be used in conjunction with a Bluetooth-capable smartphone. Its core functions include:

  • Timekeeping: Displays the current time with hour, minute, second, month, day, and day of the week. It supports both 12-hour and 24-hour formats and has a full auto calendar from 2000 to 2099. The watch can automatically adjust its time setting by connecting with a paired phone.
  • World Time: Allows users to view the current time in any of 38 time zones around the globe, including Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). World Time city settings can be configured via the CASIO WATCHES app. The watch also supports swapping Home Time and World Time.
  • Alarm: Features up to five independent alarms that sound when a specified time is reached. Users can configure alarm settings and enable/disable the hourly time signal, which causes the watch to beep every hour on the hour.
  • Stopwatch: Measures elapsed time in 1/1000-second units for the first hour and 1/10-second units thereafter, up to a maximum of 24 hours. It also supports lap time measurements, with the ability to store up to 200 lap records in watch memory. Stopwatch data can be transferred to and viewed on a paired phone.
  • Timer: A countdown timer that can be set in 1-second units up to 24 hours. An alarm sounds when the countdown reaches zero. Timer settings, including the countdown start time, can be configured via the CASIO WATCHES app.
  • Schedule Timer: Links with the calendar of a paired phone (OS and Google calendar) to display the remaining time of a currently ongoing scheduled event or its ending time. Up to five scheduled events can be transferred from the phone to the watch. Notification sounds for the schedule timer can be enabled or disabled.
  • Phone Finder: Allows users to trigger a tone on their paired phone to help locate it, even if the phone is in vibrate mode.

Usage Features

The watch's features are primarily accessed and configured through a combination of watch button operations and the CASIO WATCHES smartphone app.

General Operation:

  • Button A: Used to turn on illumination.
  • Button B: Cycles between digital display contents in Timekeeping Mode and is used to complete setting operations.
  • Button C: Cycles between watch modes. Holding it down for at least two seconds returns the watch to Timekeeping Mode.
  • Button D: Changes settings when a setting screen is displayed.

Mobile Link Connectivity:

  • The watch connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth, enabling automatic time adjustment, configuration of World Time cities, alarms, timer settings, and hand alignment correction.
  • To use Mobile Link features, the CASIO WATCHES app must be installed on the phone, and the phone's Bluetooth must be enabled.
  • Pairing: The initial connection process involves moving the phone close to the watch, tapping the CASIO WATCHES app icon, selecting the watch model, and holding down button D on the watch until [CNCT] changes from fast to slow flashing, indicating pairing is complete.
  • Auto Time Adjustment: The watch automatically adjusts its time setting when connected to a phone, especially after changes in the phone's time zone or summer time, or after 24 hours since the last adjustment.
  • Airplane Mode: This mode disables radio wave emission, making it suitable for use in medical facilities or aircraft where radio signals are restricted. It can be enabled/disabled via watch operations.

Display and Illumination:

  • The watch features a double LED light for illumination: a face LED light and an LCD LED backlight.
  • Manual Illumination: Pressing button A turns on the illumination.
  • Auto Light: When enabled, the face illumination turns on automatically when the watch is angled towards the face (40 degrees or more). Auto Light remains enabled for approximately six hours unless manually disabled.
  • Hand Shift Feature: To facilitate easy viewing of the digital display, the analog hands can be temporarily shifted out of the way by holding down button A and pressing button C. The hands will automatically return to normal timekeeping positions after about an hour of non-operation.

Setting Configuration:

  • Many settings, such as summer time, 12/24-hour timekeeping, date display format, day of the week language, schedule notification tone, button operation tone, auto light, and illumination duration, can be configured through watch operations by entering a setting mode (typically by holding down button B in Timekeeping Mode).
  • The CASIO WATCHES app provides a more intuitive interface for configuring various watch settings, including World Time cities, alarm settings, and timer settings.

Maintenance Features

Proper care and maintenance are crucial for ensuring the longevity and optimal performance of the Casio 5686 watch.

Water Resistance:

  • The watch's water resistance level (e.g., WATER RESIST, 5BAR, 10BAR, 20BAR) is indicated on the back cover. Users must adhere to specific usage precautions based on this rating.
  • General Precautions: Avoid operating the crown or buttons while the watch is submerged or wet. Do not wear the watch in baths, heated swimming pools, saunas, or high-temperature/high-humidity environments. Avoid contact with soaps or detergents.
  • Seawater Exposure: After submersion in seawater, rinse the watch thoroughly with plain water to remove salt and dirt.
  • Gasket Replacement: Gaskets should be replaced periodically (every two to three years) to maintain water resistance. Battery replacement should be performed by an authorized CASIO service center, which will also inspect water resistance.
  • Leather Bands: Water-resistant watches with leather bands should avoid swimming, washing, or any activity that causes direct exposure of the leather band to water.

Temperature and Impact:

  • Temperature Extremes: Avoid leaving the watch in locations subject to very high or very low temperatures (e.g., car dashboards, near heaters) as this can cause timekeeping errors, malfunction, or LCD problems.
  • Impact: While designed to withstand normal daily use and light activity, strong impacts can lead to malfunction.

Chemicals and Storage:

  • Chemical Exposure: Do not allow the watch to come into contact with thinners, gasoline, solvents, oils, fats, cleaners, adhesives, paints, medicines, or cosmetics, as these can cause discoloration or damage to resin, leather, and other parts.
  • Storage: For long-term storage, thoroughly wipe the watch clean of dirt, sweat, and moisture, and store it in a cool, dry place.

Resin and Metal Components:

  • Resin Care: Avoid prolonged contact with other items while wet, as this can cause color transfer. Dry the watch thoroughly before storage. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or uncleanness can cause discoloration. Friction can also cause discoloration of painted components. Fluorescent colors may fade if left wet for long periods.
  • Metal Care: Failure to clean dirt from metal components can lead to rust, even on stainless steel or plated parts. Wipe metal components exposed to sweat or water with a soft, absorbent cloth and dry in a well-ventilated location. For thorough cleaning, use a soft toothbrush with a weak solution of water and a mild neutral detergent, or soapy water, then rinse and dry. When cleaning metal parts, wrap the watch case with plastic wrap to prevent contact with detergents.

Leather Band Care:

  • Avoid prolonged contact with other items while wet to prevent color transfer. Dry the band thoroughly with a soft cloth before storage. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or uncleanness can cause discoloration. Rubbing or dirt can also cause color transfer and discoloration.

Battery Replacement:

  • Battery replacement should be performed by an original retailer or authorized CASIO service center using the specified battery type.
  • The initial battery is for factory testing and may have a shorter life. Replacement of this battery, even within the warranty period, will be charged.
  • Low battery power is indicated by large timekeeping error, dim display contents, or a blank display. Replace the battery as soon as possible to prevent malfunction.

Hand Alignment:

  • If the analog hands are out of alignment due to strong magnetism or impact, they can be adjusted using CASIO WATCHES or through watch operations.

General Maintenance:

  • Regularly wipe the watch with a soft cloth to keep it free of dirt, sweat, water, and other foreign matter.
  • Periodically rotate the crown and rotary bezel, and press buttons to maintain proper operation.
  • If any band abnormality (loss of flexibility, cracks, discoloration, looseness, pin issues) is noticed, stop using the watch immediately and take it to a CASIO service center for inspection, repair, or replacement.
