Overview

This document describes the operation of a digital watch, model 3502, manufactured by CASIO. The watch offers a variety of functions, including timekeeping, alarms, a countdown timer, a stopwatch, dual time, and a backlight.

Function Description

Timekeeping Mode: This is the primary mode for displaying the current time and date. The watch can display time in either a 12-hour or 24-hour format. In the 12-hour format, a "P" indicator signifies PM times (noon to 11:59 p.m.), while no indicator is present for AM times (midnight to 11:59 a.m.). The 24-hour format displays times from 0:00 to 23:59 without any indicator. The date display includes the day of the week, month, and day, with the year being settable within the range of 2000 to 2099. The watch features a full auto-calendar, which automatically adjusts for different month lengths and leap years, eliminating the need for manual date adjustments once initially set, unless the battery is replaced.

Alarms Mode: The watch supports up to five independent multi-function alarms, each configurable with hour, minutes, month, and day settings. These alarms can be set as:

  • Daily alarm: Sounds every day at the set time.
  • Date alarm: Sounds at the specific time on the specific date.
  • 1-Month alarm: Sounds every day at the set time, but only during the specified month.
  • Monthly alarm: Sounds every month at the set time, on the specified day. One of the five alarms (Alarm 1) includes a snooze feature, which causes the alarm to sound seven times at five-minute intervals. Additionally, the watch can be configured to sound an Hourly Time Signal, which beeps every hour on the hour. Alarm tones sound for 10 seconds when triggered. Any button press will stop an active alarm tone. Specific actions, such as displaying the Timekeeping Mode setting screen or the Alarm 1 setting screen, will cancel a snooze alarm operation during its 5-minute interval.

Countdown Timer Mode: This function allows for a countdown from a set time, ranging from one minute up to 24 hours, in one-minute or one-hour increments. An alarm sounds when the countdown reaches zero. The timer also offers an auto-repeat function, which automatically restarts the countdown from its original value each time it reaches zero. The countdown operation continues even if the user exits the Countdown Timer Mode. The alarm for the countdown timer sounds for 10 seconds or until any button is pressed. If auto-repeat is off, the timer automatically resets to its starting value after the alarm stops.

Stopwatch Mode: The stopwatch measures elapsed time, split times, and two finishes with a measuring unit of 1/100 of a second. Its capacity is 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59.99 seconds. The stopwatch can continue to run, restarting from zero after reaching its limit, until manually stopped. An ongoing measurement operation will continue internally even if the user switches to another mode. However, if a split time is displayed when exiting the Stopwatch Mode, it will not be displayed upon returning to the mode.

Dual Time Mode: This mode allows the user to keep track of time in a different time zone. The seconds count in Dual Time Mode is synchronized with the seconds count of the Timekeeping Mode.

Backlight: The watch features an LED (light-emitting diode) backlight with a light guide panel that illuminates the entire display for easy reading in dark conditions. The backlight stays on for approximately one second with each activation.

Usage Features

Button Operations: The watch utilizes a set of buttons (A, B, C, D) for navigation and setting adjustments. Pressing the 'C' button cycles through the different modes (Timekeeping, Alarm, Countdown Timer, Stopwatch, Dual Time). Holding down the 'C' button for about one second from any mode will return the watch to the Timekeeping Mode. The 'B' button is dedicated to illuminating the display with the backlight in any mode. Button operations are clearly indicated in the manual with corresponding letters.

Setting Adjustments: Settings in various modes (e.g., time, date, alarm time, countdown start time) are typically adjusted by holding down the 'A' button until the relevant digits flash, indicating the setting screen. The 'C' button is then used to move the flashing selection between different settings, and the 'D' button is used to increase the selected setting. Pressing 'A' again exits the setting screen. For seconds, pressing 'D' when the seconds are between 30 and 59 resets them to 00 and adds one to the minutes; if seconds are between 00 and 29, minutes remain unchanged.

Scrolling Data: The 'D' button is used to scroll through setting screen data. Holding down this button during a scroll operation enables high-speed scrolling through the data.

Indicators: Various indicators are used to convey the watch's status. For example, the "P" indicator for PM times, alarm on indicators (AL1, AL2, etc.), a snooze on indicator (SNZ), and an auto-repeat indicator (A.RPT) are displayed on the screen as appropriate. When an alarm is sounding, its corresponding alarm on indicator flashes.

Auto Return Feature: To prevent unintended changes, if a setting screen with flashing digits is left unattended for two or three minutes without any operation, the watch automatically saves any settings made up to that point and exits the setting screen.

Maintenance Features

Battery Life: The watch is powered by one lithium battery (Type: CR2032). The estimated battery life is approximately 10 years, assuming alarm operation for 10 seconds per day and one backlight operation for 1.5 seconds per day. Frequent use of the backlight will shorten the battery life.

Calendar Maintenance: The built-in full automatic calendar handles all date adjustments, including varying month lengths and leap years, from the year 2000 to 2099. This means that once the date is initially set, no further manual adjustments are required for the calendar function, except in the event of a battery replacement.

Backlight Precautions: While the backlight provides illumination for dark environments, its visibility may be reduced when viewed under direct sunlight. The backlight automatically turns off if an alarm sounds.
