Overview

The PHENIX is a comprehensive regulation system designed for salt electrolysis in swimming pools. It works in conjunction with a salt chlorinator to regulate chlorine production and adjust the water's acidity (pH).

Function Description:

The PHENIX system measures and regulates the pH and RedOx (ORP) potential of pool water. For pH regulation, it injects a pH correcting solution (either pHminus to lower pH or pHplus to increase pH) into the water as needed. The user can configure the PHENIX to operate in either pH- mode (injecting acid) or pH+ mode (injecting base). The regulation is proportional, meaning the dosing speed increases with a greater difference from the set point. The injection flow rate can vary between 0.1 l/h and 0.9 l/h. For RedOx analysis, the PHENIX measures the oxidation reduction potential of the water. If this potential falls below a user-defined threshold, the PHENIX activates chlorine production from a connected chlorinator. The salt water chlorinator separates salt (NaCl) into sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl), which then forms hypochlorous acid (HClO), a powerful disinfectant. The presence of HClO affects the ORP measured by the PHENIX, providing an indication of the water's disinfectant capacity and sanitary status. The higher the potential, the greater the disinfectant power. The device also provides an estimate of the active chlorine concentration (hypochlorous acid) in ppm, calculated based on ORP, pH, and temperature. This value is for indication only and not a substitute for chemical analysis.

Usage Features:

The PHENIX features a user-friendly interface with a drop-down menu for monitoring system status and configuring settings.

  • Display: The main screen shows the measured RedOx potential (in mV), an indicator for chlorinator activation, filtration status, and the measured pH. Messages regarding system status (e.g., filtration pump off, max product volume exceeded, empty container, abnormal pH/ORP readings) are displayed alternately.
  • pH Function Status Screen: Displays the pH dosing mode (pH+/pH-/ON/OFF), the measured pH value, the programmed set point, an arrow indicating pump operation, and the volume of pH corrector injected over the past 24 hours.
  • ORP Function Status Screen: Shows the ORP operating mode (ON/OFF/PRG/REG), programmed duration (in PRG mode), actual daily production duration, elapsed time since the start of the 24-hour period, and a "P" indicator when chlorine production is active.
  • Installer Mode Screens: Accessible only in "Installer" mode, these screens display total volume of pH corrector injected, total chlorine production since operation, and an estimate of hypochlorous acid concentration (HClO) in ppm.
  • pH Menu:
    • Dosage pH: Allows selection of pH regulation mode (pH-, pH+, ON for continuous injection, OFF to prevent injection).
    • pH set point: Defines the desired pH value for regulation.
    • V/24h: Sets the maximum permissible volume of pH corrector to be injected per day (in litres). A value of 0 removes this restriction, but setting a value is advisable.
    • Cont: Defines the volume of the pH corrector container (0 to 25L). The device tracks the remaining volume and blocks the pump when it reaches 0.
  • Oxidant Menu:
    • Ox Prod: Allows selection of ORP regulation mode (REG for threshold-based production, PRG for programmed quantity, ON for continuous production, OFF to prevent chlorine injection).
    • ORP limit: Sets the desired RedOx potential threshold.
    • Prod/24h: Programs the desired production duration in PRG mode.
  • Settings Menu:
    • Language: Allows selection from 8 available languages.
    • Reset to zero: Resets all PHENIX counters (time, total liquid injected) and cancels previous calibrations.

Hydraulic Connection:

  • Sensors: pH and ORP sensors are fragile and sensitive electrodes that generate a low electrical voltage. They must be handled with care. They are installed using pipe saddles and sensor adapters, with TEFLON for connections.
  • Injector: The injector, which delivers pH correcting solution, must be placed after the pH sensor and as close as possible to the backflow to the pool. It is connected via a crystal tube from the dosing pump and screwed into a pipe saddle using TEFLON.
  • Installation Diagram: The pH sensor is positioned directly after the filter. The pHminus or pHplus product injector is placed just before the pool backflow outlet. If a heater and chlorinator cell are used, they should be placed between the pH sensor and the injector.

Electrical Connection:

  • Requires a 30mA differential device for power protection.
  • Power supply must be permanent and protected against overvoltage and overloads.
  • With CCEI LIMPIDO chlorinator: PHENIX connects in series between the LIMPIDO flow detector and the LIMPIDO. A control cable connects the LIMPIDO flow detector to the PHENIX "Flow detector" input, and another cable connects the PHENIX control output to the LIMPIDO "Flow detector" input.
  • With CCEI LIMPIDO EZ chlorinator: The control cable is cut into two parts. One connects the LIMPIDO EZ flow detector to the PHENIX "Flow detector" input, and the other connects the PHENIX control output to the LIMPIDO EZ "Flow detector" input. The LIMPIDO EZ must be in 'Normal/Shock' mode (Thermoregulation indicator off).
  • With CCEI ZELIA ZLT chlorinator: The control cable is cut into two parts. One connects the flow detector (optional) to the PHENIX "Flow detector" input, and the other connects the PHENIX control output to the ZELIA ZLT "RedOx Control" input. The ZELIA ZLT must be in 'PA' mode (Regulated Production).
  • With other chlorinators: Requires professional installation and knowledge of the equipment. Contact technical department for assistance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Sensor Calibration: Essential for reliable measurements. Recommended periodically and upon initial operation.
    • pH Calibration: Performed using pH7 and pH9 solutions. The device guides the user through immersing the sensor in each solution and validating the readings.
    • ORP Calibration: Performed using a 650mV solution. The device guides the user through immersing the sensor and validating the reading.
    • Calibration is compulsory during installation, after replacing the sensor, after cleaning the appliance, after long storage, or if measurements differ from expected results.
  • Storing the Sensors:
    • Never immerse in distilled water.
    • For long-term storage: store dry.
    • For short-term storage: store in a trimolar KCl solution, or tap water.
  • Reconditioning Sensors: The lifespan of a sensor can be extended by periodic reconditioning. This involves soaking the sensor in a dilute hydrochloric acid solution (HCl 0.1M). Reconditioning is recommended if the slope becomes too low, response time is too long, or point 0 is offset.
