Overview

This document describes the Char-Broil Model 18402082, a portable outdoor gas grill designed for residential use. It operates on a 16.4 oz. disposable LP (propane) cylinder (DOT 39 Cylinder) and is not intended for commercial use. The grill features a single burner and a cooking grate, with a lid that can be opened or removed during lighting and cooking.

Function Description:

The Char-Broil Model 18402082 is a portable gas grill used for outdoor cooking. It utilizes a propane cylinder to fuel a burner, which heats a cooking grate for grilling food. The grill includes a regulator/valve assembly to control gas flow and flame intensity, an igniter for easy lighting, and a temperature gauge to monitor internal temperature. The design emphasizes portability, making it suitable for various outdoor settings.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: LP (liquefied petroleum) gas, specifically 16.4 oz. disposable cylinders (DOT 39 Cylinder). Refilling these cylinders is not recommended.
  • Gas Pressure Regulator: Supplied with the grill, set for an outlet pressure of 11 inches water column (0.40 psi).
  • Burner: Single tube burner.
  • Ignition: Push-button igniter. Match lighting is also an option.
  • Temperature Gauge: Integrated into the lid for monitoring internal grill temperature.
  • Construction: Features a firebox, cooking grate, heat tent, and a leg assembly with a shield.
  • Clearances: Requires a minimum of 2 ft. (0.6m) from any wall or surface and 10 ft. (3m) from objects that can catch fire or ignition sources.
  • Safety Certifications: Safety certified for use in the United States and/or Canada only, conforming to National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, and LP Gas Code ANSI/NFPA 58.

Usage Features:

  • Portability: Designed for easy transport and outdoor use. The leg assembly provides a stable base.
  • Easy Setup: Propane cylinder installation involves hand-tightening the cylinder clockwise into the regulator/valve. No tools are required for this step.
  • Lighting Procedure:
    • Igniter: Open or remove the lid, push and turn the regulator/valve knob to HIGH, then rapidly push the igniter button. If ignition doesn't occur within 5 seconds, turn the knob OFF, wait 5 minutes, and repeat.
    • Match Lighting: Remove the cooking grate, place a lighted wooden match under the heat tent near the burner, then turn the control knob to the lighting position. Observe flames to ensure the burner ignites and stays lit.
  • Temperature Control: The regulator/valve knob allows adjustment of flame height from HIGH to LOW for desired cooking temperatures. The integrated temperature gauge helps monitor the internal temperature.
  • Preheating: It is recommended to preheat the grill for 6 minutes with the lid closed after lighting to ensure proper heat distribution and to burn off any manufacturing odors.
  • Food Safety: The manual emphasizes four basic steps for food safety: Clean (wash hands, utensils, surfaces), Separate (raw meats from ready-to-eat foods), Cook (thoroughly to kill bacteria, using a thermometer), and Chill (refrigerate prepared foods promptly).
  • Outdoor Use Only: Strictly for outdoor use in well-ventilated spaces. Never use in enclosed areas like carports, garages, porches, or under overhead structures.
  • Unattended Operation: Never operate the grill unattended, and keep children and pets away from the appliance.
  • No Charcoal/Ceramic Briquets: Do not use charcoal or ceramic briquets unless specifically supplied with the grill.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Frequency: Clean often, preferably after each cookout.
    • Grease Accumulation: Regularly remove solidified meat drippings from the bottom of the grill to prevent overflow and grease fires.
    • Interior Surfaces: Clean the interior surfaces of the grill lid and bottom with a strong solution of detergent and water and a scrub brush. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry.
    • Cooking Grate: Can be cleaned with a wire brush. Ensure no loose bristles remain on cooking surfaces.
    • Painted Surfaces: Do not apply caustic grill/oven cleaner to painted surfaces.
    • Spider Alert: Regularly check and clean the venturi and burner tubes for spider webs or insect nests, which can obstruct gas flow and cause "flashback" problems. This involves removing and cleaning the burner and venturi tube assembly.
  • Storage:
    • Allow the grill to cool completely before storing.
    • Disconnect the LP cylinder and install its protective cap over the outlet threads.
    • Remove the regulator/valve from the grill to prevent dirt from entering the propane cylinder probe.
    • Store the regulator/valve in a heavy plastic bag inside the grill.
    • If stored indoors, the propane cylinder must be disconnected and stored outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
  • Leak Testing:
    • Perform a leak test each time the gas cylinder is replaced or after storage.
    • Use a 50/50 soap and water solution applied to the connection between the gas cylinder and regulator. Growing bubbles indicate a leak.
    • If a leak cannot be stopped, remove the gas cylinder and check for damaged threads, dirt, or obstructions on the regulator and cylinder openings. Replace damaged parts.
  • Burner Flame Check: Regularly check burner flames to ensure they stay lit when rotating the control knob from HIGH to LOW. Flames should be blue.
