Starting and Operating Instructions
. . . 208
Towing Tips
Take note of the trailer
manufacturer’s instructions.
Practice turning, stopping
and reversing before you start
towing in traffic.
Make sure your trailer is
equipped with lights which
meet country and local require-
ments. Always check for the
proper operation of all trailer
lights before you start to tow.
Do not drive faster than
80 km/h or the legal maximum
speed, whichever is lower.
When driving uphill, do not
drive faster than 30 km/h in
first gear or 50 km/h in second
gear.
Drive at a reduced speed and
avoid sharp turns or abrupt
maneuvers.
Make sure there is enough
room when cornering.
Have someone guide you when
reversing.
Allow adequate stopping
distance.
Slow down and shift into a
lower gear before descending
steep or long downhill grades.
Avoid holding the brake
pedal down too long or too
frequently.
Otherwise, the brakes could
overheat, resulting in reduced
brake efficiency.
On a long uphill gradient, shift
down and reduce your speed
to around 70 km/h to reduce
the possibility of the engine
and transmission overheating.
When parking, block the
wheels on both the vehicle and
the trailer.
Set the parking brake firmly.
When you are ready to drive
again, drive slowly until the
trailer is clear of the chocks.
Stop and have someone pick
up and store the chocks.
Make sure that anyone
removing the wheel chocks
stands to the side of the trailer,
not behind the trailer. Other-
wise, if the brakes or hitch were
to slip, the trailer could roll and
the person could be injured.

Section 3
When towing a trailer, avoid
parking your vehicle on a hill. If
something were to go wrong,
your rig could start to move.
People could be injured and
both your vehicle and the
trailer could be damaged.
For more information, see
"Parking On Hills" later in this
section.
Parking on Hills
CAUTION
When towing a trailer, avoid
parking your vehicle on a hill. If
something were to go wrong,
your rig could start to move.
People could be injured and
both your vehicle and the trailer
could be damaged.
You should not park vehicles with
trailers on a grade (hill). However,
if you must park on a grade, follow
these steps:
1. Apply your regular brakes, but
don't shift into P (Park) for an
automatic transmission or into
gear for a manual transmission
yet.
2. Have someone place chocks
under the trailer wheels.
3. When the wheel chocks are in
place, release the regular
brakes until the chocks absorb
the load.
