1 c - Contacts adjustment (magneto or distributor / Delco)
In order for it to give a good spark, the breaker (also called platinum-plated screws) must be clean, free from
oxidation, and set at a distance of 0.4 mm The small magneto keys have a narrow blade of very practical
thickness for this setting. The contact grains must be flat, that is to say they must not overlap one in the other.
If necessary, straighten the plate so as to obtain a "flat" contact.
Avoid filing the contacts as this increases their electrical resistance
2) Roughly position the finger of the magneto distributor (or Delco) in front of the stud corresponding to the HT
wire which will lead the spark to the first cylinder. (normally at `` 7 o'clock '') The others will follow
automatically provided that the wires have been correctly installed in the order 1-3-4-2. *
In the Delco, the distributor finger is made of brass and it does not rub not on the contact pads of the HT wires
But in the magneto, it is fitted with a small carbon brush (mounted on a flexible spring) that must be taken care
not to break when reassembling the cover Check that it slides correctly and check his bevel facilitating the
insertion of the cover
While you have this magneto dispenser cover in hand, take a good look inside. Sometimes traces of charcoal
connect one copper stud to another, causing misfiring. All you have to do is remove them with a clean cloth
moistened with a degreaser, trichlorethylene. Warning: never abrasives!
Note the magnetos of B2 were turning in the opposite direction (counterclockwise distributor);

Make sure your magneto is supposed to turn clockwise (right arrow above the driveshaft) ... and that its
distributor cap is a 5HP model so with marks 1-3- 4-2 clockwise
1 d - Breaker setting check:
The spark that must be brought to cylinder 1 ( next to radiator )occurs at the precise moment when the
contacts of the breaker start to separate.
On a magneto, this occurs when appears in the small round window at the top of the front flange ... a vertical
line of red marker marks with the letter 'D'
To check this setting:
a) insert a sheet of cigarette paper between the contacts of the switch.
b) turn the drive in its normal operating direction by pulling lightly on the paper, until the contacts of the
breaker begin to release their grip on the sheet. You are at the ignition point, do not touch it anymore. (Be
careful, however, not to tear the sheet, leaving a piece of paper between the contacts. ("Inexplicable" failure
guaranteed!)
1 e - Maintenance and precautions
To facilitate troubleshooting and maintenance, it is useful to draw a thin line paint on the timing cover, the drive
elements, and the magneto face.
Keep in mind, however, that this line will only correspond to cylinder 1 every other turn (and the second turn to
cylinder 4). It will therefore not exempt, when reinstalling the magneto, from having to ensure that the first
cylinder is at the end of compression and the distributor finger opposite the HT wire N ° 1 (approximately at 7
o'clock). , a red marker line marked '' D '' should appear in the small window on the front of the magneto.
The magneto only requires a few drops of petroleum jelly or sewing machine oil every 3,000 km approximately
in the oiler located on its upper part. The breaker pivots must be lubricated at homeopathic doses to avoid
lubricating the contacts.
