Codan Envoy Red Buon
Cong Check & Changes
There are some Codan Envoys on the Austravel Safety Net HF Radio Network that may fail the Red Buon
push process, in the event of a H.E.L.P. (4357) Emergency call acvaon. This issue maybe overcome via local
conguraon changes on the radio handpiece avoiding the need for your radio to be returned to your dealer
DO NOT push the RED BUTTON during any part of these changes.
The Red Buon push process should work like this….the Red Buon is pushed and held for approx. 3-5 seconds
at which point the radio will start a sequence of SELCALLS on several nominated channels. This SELCALLING pro-
cess can take up to 5 minutes depending on individual radio conguraons. At the end of the call process the
radio SHOULD return to channel SCAN MODE.

Overview

This document provides a guide for configuring Codan Envoy HF radios, specifically addressing an issue where the "Red Button" push process for H.E.L.P. (4357) Emergency calls may fail. The guide outlines a series of local configuration changes that can be made on the radio handpiece to resolve this issue, thereby avoiding the need to return the radio to a dealer for service.

Function Description:

The Codan Envoy is an HF (High Frequency) radio designed for communication, particularly within networks like the Austravel Safety Net HF Radio Network. Its primary function is to facilitate communication, including emergency calls, over long distances. The "Red Button" feature is a critical safety function, designed to initiate an emergency call sequence (SELCALLS) on pre-nominated channels. This process is intended to alert other network participants to a distress situation. The radio also supports various other communication modes and features, including scanning, user data management, and contact management.

Important Technical Specifications (Inferred from the document):

  • Radio Model: Codan Envoy (specifically X1/X2 models are mentioned as part of the Austravel Safety Net Group).
  • Network Compatibility: Austravel Safety Net HF Radio Network.
  • Emergency Call Frequency: H.E.L.P. (4357) is mentioned as the emergency call frequency.
  • Emergency Call Mechanism: Utilizes SELCALLS (Selective Calling) on multiple nominated channels.
  • Emergency Call Duration: The SELCALLING process can take up to 5 minutes, depending on individual radio configurations.
  • Post-Emergency Call State: The radio is designed to return to channel SCAN MODE after the emergency call process is complete.
  • Power/Signal Indicators: The display shows "12.2 V" (likely battery voltage) and "0 dBuV" (likely signal strength or noise level).
  • Time and Date Display: The radio's display shows the current time and date (e.g., "12:16:46 Mon 9 Nov 2020").

Usage Features:

The Codan Envoy radio is operated via a handpiece with a display and a keypad. Key usage features include:

  • Menu Navigation: The radio features a "MENU" button for accessing various settings and functions.
  • Admin Login: Access to advanced configuration settings requires an "Admin Login," which may or may not be password-protected. The document explicitly states, "Hopefully, there is no Admin Password set," indicating that some radios might have one.
  • User Data Management: The "User Data" icon allows users to manage their personal or radio-specific data.
  • Contacts Management: The "Contacts" icon provides access to a list of stored contacts, including "Emergency Contacts."
  • Emergency Contacts Configuration: Users can configure specific "Emergency Contacts," such as "Austravel EMERGENCY," and define the associated call settings.
  • Emergency Channel Selection: Within the "Emergency Contacts" settings, users can select specific "Emergency Ch" (channels) for emergency calls.
  • Call Type Selection: The "Edit Call" screen allows selection of "Call Type," with "Send Position" being a crucial setting for emergency calls.
  • Save and Close Functions: "Save" and "Close" buttons are available to apply changes and exit menus.
  • Reboot Functionality: The radio can be rebooted, which is a necessary step after certain configuration changes.
  • Keypad: The handpiece includes a numerical keypad (1-3) and directional arrows for navigation, along with dedicated buttons for "CALL," "SCAN," and "TUNE."
  • "Red Button" Operation: The "Red Button" is designed to be pushed and held for approximately 3-5 seconds to initiate an emergency call sequence. The document explicitly warns, "DO NOT push the RED BUTTON during any part of these changes," highlighting its critical function and the need to avoid accidental activation during configuration.

Maintenance Features (Inferred from the document's purpose):

The document itself serves as a maintenance guide, enabling users to perform specific configuration changes without professional intervention. This suggests a user-friendly design for certain maintenance tasks.

  • Self-Service Configuration: The detailed step-by-step instructions allow owners/operators to perform critical configuration updates themselves, reducing reliance on dealers for software-related issues.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The document acts as a troubleshooting guide for the "Red Button" failure, providing a direct solution.
  • Firmware/Software Updates (Implied): While not explicitly stated, the need for configuration changes often implies that the radio's software or firmware can be updated or adjusted to address operational issues.
  • Network Compliance: The guide emphasizes ensuring the radio's settings comply with the Austravel Safety Net Group's requirements, particularly for the "SEND POSITION" setting after an emergency call, which ensures the radio returns to SCAN MODE. This is a crucial aspect of maintaining network integrity and operational readiness.
  • Documentation for Network Participants: The document is intended for "owners/operators of Codan Envoy's X1/X2 that are part of the Austravel Safety Net Group," and also as a "guide to those people around Australia setting Envoys for the Austravel Safety Net Group's HF Radio Network," indicating a standardized approach to radio maintenance and configuration across the network.

The document highlights the importance of the "Red Button" functionality for safety and provides a practical solution to a common operational issue, empowering users to maintain their radios effectively within the Austravel Safety Net HF Radio Network.
