  If the Craftsman Yard Vacuum engine fails to start, ensure the throttle lever is in the FAST or START position. Also, check that the spark plug wire is securely connected to the spark plug. Verify the choke is in the ON position and that the fuel tank isn't empty or filled with stale fuel. If the recoil cord is hard to pull, there might be an obstruction in the impeller; disconnect the spark plug wire before removing any object. Inspect the spark plug, clean, adjust the gap, or replace it if needed. Ensure the safety switch is activated by the front tab on the bag handle, and that the safety switch wire is correctly connected to the engine and grounded to the mounting bracket.

Also, check for water or dirt in the fuel system; drain the tank and refill with fresh fuel. Finally, inspect the air cleaner and clean or replace it if it's dirty.

Immediately stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire, and clean the flail screen and the inside of the discharge opening. A foreign object could also be lodged in the impeller; stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire, and remove any obstruction. Ensure the engine is running at full throttle and that the vacuum bag is not full; empty the bag if necessary.
