OPERATION
Adding Fuel
CAUTION
An adult should fuel this engine. NEVER allow children to refuel the engine.
Gasoline (fuel) vapors are highly flammable and can explode. Fuel vapors
can spread and be ignited by a spark or flame many feet away from engine.
To prevent injury or death from fuel fires, follow these instructions:
NOTE: Someenginesmaynothavethefuelcapinstalledforshippingpurposes.To
install,removeanddiscardthefueltankdustcaplabeled“Discard”.Removethe
bubblewrappackagingfromaroundthefuelcapandtightensecurely.
• DONOTuseleadedfuel.
• Fuelmustbefreshandclean.NEVERusefuelleftoverfromlast
seasonorstoredforlongperiods.
• NEVERmixoilwithfuel.
• DONOTusefuelcontainingMethanol(WoodAlcohol)
NOTE: Beforerefueling,allowenginetocooltwominutes.
1. Cleanaroundfuelfillbeforeremovingcaptofuel.
2. Filltankuntilfuelreaches1⁄2inchbelowthebottomofthefillernecktoallow
spaceforfuelexpansion.Becarefulnottooverfill.
3. Replacethegasolinecapandtightensecurely.Wipeupspilledfuelbefore
startingengine.IffuelisspilledDONOTstartengine.Movemachineaway
fromareaofspillage.Avoidcreatinganysourceofignitionuntilfuelvapors
aregone.
WARNING
Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower
while starting engine or operating mower. Never run engine indoors or
in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. Engine exhaust contains carbon
monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. Keep hands, feet, hair and loose
clothing away from any moving parts on engine and lawn mower.
To Start Engine
1. Standingbehindthemower,squeezethebladecontrolhandleagainstupper
handle.SeeFigure15
2. Holdingthesetwohandlestogetherfirmly,grasprecoilstarterhandleand
pullropeslowlyuntilresistanceisfelt,thenpullwitharapid,continuous,full
armstroke.SeeFigure15.Keepingafirmgriponthestartercordhandle,let
theroperewindslowly.Repeatuntilenginecranks.
WARNING
Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull hand and arm toward
engine faster than you can let go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises or
sprains could result.
To Stop Engine
1. Releasebladecontroltostoptheengineandblade.
WARNING
Wait for the blade to stop completely before performing any work on the
mower or to remove the grass catcher.
Using Your Lawn Mower
Besurelawnisclearofstones,sticks,wire,orotherobjectswhichcoulddamage
lawnmowerorengine.Suchobjectscouldbeaccidentlythrownbythemowerin
anydirectionandcauseseriouspersonalinjurytotheoperatorandothers.
WARNING
The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects being
thrown into the eyes, which can damage your eyes severely. Always
wear safety glasses while operating the mower, or while performing any
adjustments or repairs on it.

Using as Mulcher
Formulchinggrass,removethegrasscatcherandsidedischargechutefromthe
mower.Foreffectivemulching,donotcutwetgrass.Ifthegrasshasbeenallowed
togrowinexcessoffourinches,mulchingisnotrecommended.Usethegrass
catchertobagclippingsinstead.
Using Grass Catcher
Youcanusethegrasscatchertocollectclippingswhileyouareoperatingthemower.
1. Attachgrasscatcherfollowinginstructionsinthe“Assembly”section.Grass
clippingswillautomaticallycollectinbagasyourunmower.Operatemower
untilgrassbagisfull.
2. Stopenginecompletelybyreleasingthebladecontrol.Makesurethatthe
unithascometoacompletestop.
3. Liftdischargedoorandpullgrassbagupandawayfromthemowerto
removethebag.Disposeofthegrassclippingsandreinstallthebagwhen
complete.
WARNING
If you strike a foreign object, stop the engine. Disconnect the spark plug
wire, thoroughly inspect mower for any damage, and repair damage
before restarting and operating. Extensive vibration of mower during
operation is an indication of damage. The unit should be promptly
inspected and repaired.
