Checkingthe Engine Oil
Usea4-stroke,oranequivalenthighdetergent,premiumqualitymotoroilcertifiedto
meetorexceedU.S.automobilemanufacturer'srequirementsfor serviceclassification
ofaminimumlevelSJ(higherletterratingsareacceptablesuchasSLandSMgrades).
Motoroilwill displaythisdesignationonthecontainer.SAE10W-30isrecommended
forgeneral,alltemperatureuse.Ifsingleviscosityoilisused,selecttheappropriate
viscosityfortheaveragetemperatureinyourareafromthechartbelow.

Checkyourengineoillevelmorefrequentlyto avoidpossibleenginedamagefrom
runninglowonoil.
Tochecktheengineoil,proceedasfollows:
Ensurethatthetractorisonalevelsurface.
Cleantheoilfill areaof anydebris.
1. Removethedipstick,seeFigure9,andwipewith acleancloth.
2. Reinsertdipstickandpresscompletelydown.
3. Removethedipstickandchecktheoillevel.ItshouldbeattheFullmarkon
thedipstick.

4. If low,addoil slowlyintotheengineoilfill. Donotoverfill.Afteraddingoil,
waitoneminuteandthenrechecktheoillevel.
Donotoverfill. Overfilling with oil maycausethe engineto notstart, hard
starting, orenginesmoking.Ifoverthe FULLmarkonthe dipstick,drain oil
to reduceoillevelto FULLmarkondipstick.
Changingthe EngineOiland Filter
If the enginehasbeenrecentlyrun, the engine,muffler andsurrounding
metal surfaceswill behot andcancauseburnsto theskin. Exercisecaution
toavoidburns.
NOTE:Theoilfilter shouldbechangedateveryoilchangeinterval.
Theengineoilshouldbechangedin thefirst5hoursandthenevery50hoursor
onceaseason.Tochangetheengineoil,proceedasfollows:
1. Runtheengineforafew minutesto allowtheoilinthecrankcasetowarm
up.Warmoilwill flow morefreelyandcarryawaymoreof theengine
sedimentwhichmayhavesettledatthe bottomof thecrankcase.Usecareto
avoidburnsfromhotoil.
2. Openthetractor'shoodandlocatetheoildrainportontherightsideofthe
engine.SeeFigure9.
3. Disconnectsparkplugwireandkeepit awayfromsparkplug.
4. Removetheoilfill cap/dipstickfromtheoilfill tube.SeeFigure9.
5. Turnthesteeringwheelallthewaytothe righttobetterexposethedrain
plug.
6. Attachtheoildrainhose(packedwiththismanual)onthedrainportas
showninFigure10.Placetheoppositeendof thesleeveinacontainer
suitablefor collectingoilwith acapacityofnotlessthan64oz.

Removeoildrainpluganddraintheoil.
Removetheoildrainsleeveandstoreinasafelocationfor lateruse.
Replacetheoildrainplug.
Removetheoilfilter,seeFigure11,and disposeof it properly.
Partiallyfill thenewoilfilter approximately3/4of thewayfull with clean
freshoil.Beforeyouinstallthenew oilfilter, lightly lubricatethe oilfilter
gasketwith someoftheoilbysimplydippingyourfingerintheoiland
runningitaroundthegasket.
5. Replacedipstick,andtighten.
