Overview

The Criterion 681-4009 / QKG02C is a high-torque food waste disposer designed for efficient and safe disposal of food scraps. This appliance operates on a 110-120 Volt, 60 Hz electrical supply, and is available in models with 8.8A, 60 Hz and 930W. It is designed for continuous feed operation, meaning food waste can be added while the disposer is running.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Criterion food waste disposer is to grind food waste into small particles that can be flushed down the drain with water. This helps to reduce household waste and prevent food scraps from accumulating in landfills. The disposer is equipped with a powerful motor to handle various types of food waste, from soft items to harder scraps. It features a continuous feed design, allowing users to add food waste continuously while the unit is operating. The unit is designed to be installed under a kitchen sink, connecting to the sink's drain opening and the household plumbing system.

  • Motor Type: High Torque
  • Electrical Requirements: 110-120 Volt, 60 Hz
  • Power Consumption: 8.8A, 60 Hz and 930W (for specific models)

  • Warranty: Five (5) Year Limited Warranty on the motor and a five (5) year warranty on parts and workmanship. This warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship for five (5) years from the date of purchase. It does not cover damage caused by improper installation, abuse, misuse, or improper care and maintenance, nor damage due to aggressive air or water conditions, harsh or abrasive cleaners, or materials. Improper installation, dents/scratches incurred during shipping, handling, or installation, change in color or finish due to chemical usage, damage caused by failure to follow care and cleaning guidelines, alterations made by the user, accidental impact, fire, flood, freezing, normal wear, and bends/warping caused by forced connections, over-tightened fittings, or inadequate support during installation are specifically excluded from the warranty.
  • Components: The disposer assembly includes a stopper, removable splash guard, sink flange, rubber sink flange gasket, flange ring, ring tool, supporting plate, top supporting ring (with 3 screws), cushion mount, bottom supporting ring, elbow gasket, discharge elbow, flange elbow, and screws.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The disposer requires installation under the sink, connecting to the sink drain and the household plumbing. Tools required for installation include a pipe wrench, Phillips screwdriver, flat screwdriver, electric drill with 1-1/4" (32mm) hole saw, and plumber's putty. The installation process involves removing the old unit (if applicable), installing the mounting assembly, attaching the discharge elbow, connecting the disposer to the mounting assembly, making dishwasher connections, and completing electrical connections and grounding.
    • Mounting Assembly: The mounting assembly involves installing the sink flange with plumber's putty, followed by the supporting plate, top supporting ring, and cushion mount. The ring tool is used to tighten the flange ring.
    • Discharge Elbow: The discharge elbow is attached to the disposer body using an elbow gasket and screws, then connected to the household plumbing trap.
    • Knockout Plug: If connecting a dishwasher, the knockout plug in the disposer must be removed using a blunt instrument (steel punch or wooden dowel) and a screwdriver or sharp instrument.
    • Electrical Connection: The disposer must be properly grounded. It is designed to be plugged into a grounded receptacle that is controlled by a dedicated switch (usually wall mounted). Improper grounding can result in a risk of electric shock.
  • Operation: To operate, turn on the cold water to a medium flow, then turn the switch to the "ON" position. Slowly insert food waste into the disposer. After grinding, allow the water and disposer to run for approximately 15 seconds after shredding or grinding stops to ensure all waste is thoroughly flushed through the drain. For large bones and fibrous waste, a longer grinding time may be required.
  • Safety Information:
    • Always read all instructions before using the appliance.
    • Do not put fingers or hands into the waste disposal.
    • Turn the power switch to the off position before attempting to unblock or remove an object from the disposal.
    • Do not operate the disposal unless the splash guard is in place.
    • To reduce the risk of injury, do not put the following into the disposal: clam or oyster shells; caustic drain cleaners or similar products; glass, china or plastic; large whole bones; metal, such as bottle caps, tin cans, aluminum foil or utensils; hot grease or other hot liquids; whole cornhusks.
    • To reduce the risk of injury, close supervision is necessary when the appliance is used near children.
    • This food waste disposer is designed to operate on 110-120 Volt, 8.8A, 60 Hz and 930W.
    • Never put your head or body under the disposer; always wear safety glasses when working under the sink.
    • Always use the stopper to push food into the disposer, never your hands.
    • Do not use the disposer for anything other than food waste.
    • Ensure the drain cover stopper is in place to reduce the risk of objects falling into the disposal when not in operation.
    • If the disposer jams, turn off the electrical power, then use the ring tool or a wooden broom handle to clear the jam. Never use your hands.
    • If the disposer leaks, check the sink flange gasket, plumber's putty, supporting ring, cushion mount, and elbow installation for proper seating and tightness.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The disposer is designed to be self-cleaning. Do not attempt to lubricate the disposer. The motor is permanently lubricated. To clean, periodically grind citrus peels (lemons, oranges) or small bones to clean the interior and remove odors. Do not use caustic drain cleaners, as they can cause corrosion and damage internal parts.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Loud Noises: Often caused by accidental impact from small bones, fruit pits, or other foreign objects. Turn off power, remove the splash guard, and remove the object with long handled tongs.
    • Disposer Does Not Start: Check the power cord and circuit breaker. Ensure the stopper and/or splash guard are correctly seated. Check if the reset button (located on the front-end of the disposer) has tripped. Push the button until it clicks. If the reset button has not been tripped, check for a shorted or broken wire connection.
    • Turntable Does Not Rotate Freely: Turn off power, unplug the cord, and check for foreign objects lodged between the turntable and the grinding ring. Remove objects with a wooden spoon handle or broom handle.
    • Disposer Leaks: Check the sink flange gasket, plumber's putty, supporting ring, cushion mount, and elbow installation for proper seating and tightness. Tighten screws on the elbow flange.
