Overview

This document provides installation instructions and technical specifications for a CURT trailer hitch designed for the JEEP GLADIATOR, model years 2020-present.

Function Description

The CURT trailer hitch is a vehicle accessory designed to enable towing. It attaches to the rear cross member of the vehicle, providing a receiver for a ball mount, which in turn connects to a trailer. The installation process involves drilling through the rear bumper cover and fishwiring hardware through the vehicle's cross member to secure the hitch.

Important Technical Specifications

Weight Carrying Capacity:

  • Trailer Weight: 5,000 LBS.
  • Tongue Weight: 500 LBS.
  • Hitch Weight: 7 LBS.

Hardware Specifications:

  • Bolt, Car, 1/2-13 UNC, 1-1/2, GRD8, YZ (Part Number: 10-10287): Two required. These are carriage bolts used for securing the hitch.
  • Nut, Ser-Flange, 1/2-13 UNC, GRD8, YZ (Part Number: 20-00062): Two required. These are flange nuts used with the carriage bolts.
  • .250 x 1.00 x 3.00" Square Hole Spacer (Part Number: CM-SP6): Two required. These spacers are fishwired into the cross member to provide proper spacing for the bolts.
  • FHSCS, 3/4-10 UNC, 2, GR8 (Part Number: 10-10346): One required. This is a flat head socket cap screw used for the primary attachment point.
  • 1/2" Fishwire (Part Number: 1_2 FISHWIRE): Two required. These tools are essential for guiding the bolts and spacers through the vehicle's frame.

Torque Specifications:

  • 3/4" hardware: 320 lb-ft
  • 1/2" hardware: 110 lb-ft

Installation Time:

  • Pro Install Time: 15 MIN.
  • Novice Install Time: 30 MIN.

Level of Difficulty: EASY. No Frame Drilling is required for the main hitch installation, simplifying the process.

Usage Features

Towing Safety Information: The manual emphasizes several key aspects of safe towing:

  • Gross Trailer Weight (GTW): The total weight of the trailer and its cargo. It should be measured on a vehicle scale.
  • Tongue Weight (TW): The downward force on the hitch ball. It should be 10-15% of the GTW. Measurement can be done with a commercial scale or a bathroom scale (multiplying the reading by 3 for heavier weights).
  • Weight Carrying (WC): The total weight of the trailer and cargo. Users must not exceed the hitch's weight capacity.
  • Weight Distribution (WD): Used to balance cargo weight between front and rear wheels for better steering, braking, and level riding. The manual shows diagrams for "Without WD Hitch" and "With WD Hitch."
  • Sway Control: A device to reduce lateral trailer movements caused by wind, used in conjunction with a weight distribution hitch. Not recommended for Class 1 or 2 hitches or with surge brakes.
  • Ball Mount: Placed in the receiver hitch, secured by a hitch pin and clip. Key dimensions include Rise (A), Drop (B), Hole Size (C), and Length (D).
  • Trailer Ball: The connection point to the trailer. Factors include the ball's GTW rating, mounting platform thickness (at least 3/8"), and hole diameter (not more than 1/16" larger than the threaded shank). Users should check the nut and lock washer for security before towing. Key dimensions include Ball Diameter (A), Shank Length (B), Shank Diameter (C), and Shank Rise (D).
  • Coupler: The component that connects to the trailer ball. It must match the ball size and be securely fastened. Safety pins and locks are recommended for added security.
  • Safety Chains: Required and must be crossed under the trailer tongue to prevent it from dropping to the road if it separates. They should have enough slack for turning but not drag on the ground. Minimum breaking forces for safety chains are specified by trailer classification: Class 1 (2,000 lbs.), Class 2 (3,500 lbs.), Class 3 (5,000 lbs.).
  • Electrical: Trailer lights, electric brakes, and break-away systems must be checked for proper function before each tow. Wiring identification by color is provided for 4-way, 5-way, 6-way, and 7-way systems (Green: Right Turn & Brake, Yellow: Left Turn & Brake, Brown: Taillights, White: Ground, Red: Auxiliary Power, Blue: Electric Brakes, Purple: Back-Up Lights).

Installation Steps:

  1. Drill through the rear bumper cover using a 2" hole saw at a predefined dimple in the center, then insert the 3/4" bolt (Part Number: 10-10346).
  2. Fishwire the CM-SP6 spacer (Part Number: CM-SP6) and the 1/2" carriage bolt (Part Number: 10-10287) through the end of the cross member on both sides of the vehicle. The "Fishwire Technique" diagram illustrates how to insert the coiled end of the fishwire tool through the mounting hole and out the access hole, pass it through the spacer, thread the bolt into the coil, kink the wire to keep the spacer separate, and pull the assembly through.
  3. Raise the hitch into position and loosely secure it with the 3/4" bolt and the 1/2" flange nuts (Part Number: 20-00062).
  4. Torque the 3/4" hardware to 320 lb-ft and the 1/2" hardware to 110 lb-ft.

Tools Required:

  • 3/4" Socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque Wrench
  • 1/2" Hexbit
  • 2" Hole Saw
  • Power Drill
  • 1/4" Drill Bit
  • Safety Glasses

Maintenance Features

Periodic Checks: The manual explicitly states: "PERIODICALLY CHECK THIS RECEIVER HITCH TO ENSURE ALL FASTENERS ARE TIGHT AND ALL STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS ARE SOUND." This highlights the importance of regular inspection to ensure the hitch remains safe and functional over time.
