Overview

The CYC MOTOR LTD Photon is a high-powered electric bike (ebike) drive unit kit designed to convert standard bicycles into electric bicycles. It includes a programmed control unit and various peripherals to facilitate this conversion. The system is intended for adult use and requires careful installation and operation to ensure safety and optimal performance.

Function Description

The Photon drive unit provides electric assistance to a bicycle's drivetrain, enhancing the rider's pedaling power. It integrates with the bicycle's bottom bracket area, delivering torque directly to the crankset. The system is controlled via a display unit and a thumb throttle, allowing the rider to select assist levels and engage electric power. It features a motor sensor and a torque sensor to provide responsive and natural-feeling assistance. The kit is designed to be compatible with various bottom bracket types, including BSA threaded (68/73/83mm, 100mm, 120mm) and BB92 Pressfit (with adapter), offering versatility for different bicycle frames.

Usage Features

The Photon system offers several features to enhance the riding experience:

  • Activation and Deactivation: The drive system can be easily activated and deactivated by holding down the ON/OFF button on the display.
  • Assist Levels: Riders can select appropriate assist levels to match their riding conditions and preferences.
  • Throttle Control: A thumb throttle allows for direct engagement of electric power, providing immediate acceleration when needed.
  • Gear Shifting: While the drive unit is powering the bike, it is advised to use human input only when changing bike gears to prevent excessive wear on the chain and chainrings. After a gear change, riders can resume using the throttle or PAS (Pedal Assist System).
  • Splash and Rain Proof: The product is designed to be splash and rain proof, allowing for use in various weather conditions, though it is not waterproof and should not be submerged.
  • Mobile App & Display Integration: The system integrates with a mobile app and display units (SW102 or DS103) for monitoring and control. User manuals for these components are available for download, providing detailed instructions on their use and customization options. The CYC Ride Control app allows for enabling features like brake sensors if purchased separately.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: The CYC Motor (BAC) app utilizes Bluetooth to search for devices, facilitating connectivity and control.
  • Customizable Firmware: The control unit's hardware and software are under the GPL V3 open-source license, and its source code is available on GitHub, allowing for different firmware to be loaded. However, loading unauthorized firmware may void the product's warranty and support.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the Photon drive unit.

  • Regular Inspection: Users are advised to regularly maintain, clean, and check the status of the bike and motor system. This includes inspecting the bike and motor condition before and after each ride, as dirt accumulation and additional strain on the drivetrain can occur due to the powerful motor system.
  • Power Disconnection: Always disconnect all power supplies from the drive unit before performing any work, such as inspection, repair, maintenance, transportation, or storage. This prevents accidental engagement of the drive, which could lead to serious damage or injury.
  • Cool-Down Period: The drive unit can become hot after use. Allow sufficient time for it to cool down before performing any maintenance.
  • Storage: Store the bike in a cool and dry place, sheltered from direct sunlight and potential rain.
  • Authorized Repairs: Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the drive unit. Repairs and maintenance should only be performed by qualified experts, and only original spare parts supplied by CYC MOTOR LTD or an official dealer/distributor should be used. This ensures the safety and warranty of the drive unit are maintained.
  • Lubrication: Active moving parts, such as the chain, gear, and speed reducer, should be regularly lubricated to maintain desired performance.
  • Component Replacement: Do not replace product parts with components from a local bicycle store, as the materials used in the drive unit are specifically designed for its purposes.
  • Torque Specifications: All bolts, nuts, and screws must be tightened to the correct torque specifications provided in the manual. If anything is loose, the bike should not be ridden.
  • Chain Tension: Regularly inspect and ensure the drive unit chain has the proper tension. Incorrect tension can cause system jamming and potential injury.
  • Chain Lubrication: Ensure chains are properly lubricated. Regular cleaning and lubrication with a standard bicycle chain cleaner are recommended.
  • Wiring Inspection: Regularly inspect all electrical wires and plugs for damage.
  • Secure Wiring: Secure all wires properly. Ensure the throttle can be twisted freely without friction and returns to its original position without restriction to prevent uncontrolled system response.
  • Peripheral Connections: When plugging in the kit, ensure all peripherals are connected properly, as faulty connections can damage the controller or batteries.
  • Bottom Bracket Spacers: The kit includes various spacers to adjust the bottom bracket width for different frame types and to accommodate different chainlines. These spacers are crucial for proper installation and motor clearance.
  • Motor Support: The motor body must be supported against either the bicycle frame or other supporting structures to prevent movement during use.
