This document is an installer and user reference guide for the Daikin VRV system air conditioner, specifically for models EKVDX32A2VEB, EKVDX50A2VEB, EKVDX80A2VEB, and EKVDX100A2VEB. It provides detailed information for both authorized installers and end-users, covering installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Function Description
The Daikin EKVDX unit is an air conditioning unit designed for the pretreatment of incoming supply air from a VAM heat reclaim ventilation unit. It is intended to work in conjunction with a normal indoor unit for comfort temperature control. The system is part of a VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) system, which is a multi-split type air conditioner for commercial buildings that uses variable refrigerant flow control to maintain individual zone temperatures. The EKVDX unit ensures that the air supplied by the VAM unit is conditioned to a comfortable temperature before being distributed.
Important Technical Specifications
Refrigerant: The system can use either R410A or R32 refrigerant. R32 refrigerant is mildly flammable, requiring extra safety measures and restrictions on total refrigerant charge and/or floor area served.
Compatibility:
- Outdoor Unit: Compatible with All VRV-IV and All VRV-V units (when using R32 refrigerant). Not compatible with All VRV-III or ERQ units.
- VAM Models: Specific EKVDX models are compatible with various VAM (Heat Reclaim Ventilation Unit) models, including VAM500J8, VAM650J8, VAM800J8, VAM1000J8, VAM1500J8, and VAM2000J8. The EKVDX option is not available for VAM350J8.

- Insulation Material: Polyethylene foam with a heat transfer rate between 0.041 and 0.052 W/mK and heat resistance of at least 120°C. Insulation thickness should be at least 20 mm if temperature is >30°C and humidity >80% RH.
- Drain Piping: Keep as short as possible. Pipe size equal to or greater than connecting pipe (vinyl pipe of 20 mm nominal diameter and 26 mm outer diameter). Must slope down (at least 1/100) to prevent air trapping.
Electrical Wiring:
- Power Supply Cable: 220~240 V, 1~, 50/60 Hz, 1.5 mm² (3-core wire), H07RN-F (60245 IEC 66).
- Transmission Wiring: Refer to outdoor unit installation manual.
- User Interface Cable: 0.75 to 1.25 mm² (2-core wire), H05RN-F (60245 IEC 57), length ≤300 m.
- Cable between VAM and EKVDX: Length ≤100 m.
- Recommended Field Fuse: EKVDX32~80A2: 6 A; EKVDX100A2: 16 A.
- Residual Current Device: Must comply with applicable legislation.
Sound Pressure Level: Less than 70 dBA.
Refrigerant Leakage Detection: The R32 refrigerant leakage sensor has a lifetime of 10 years. The user interface displays error "CH-02" at end of lifetime and "CH-05" 6 months prior.
Usage Features
User Interface: Each EKVDX unit MUST be connected to a separate user interface (BRC1H* or compatible H-type user interface). The temperature setpoints are not displayed on the user interface but can be modified via field settings.
Operation Modes:
- Cooling: Activated by setpoint or setback operation.
- Heating: Activated by setpoint or setback operation.
- Fan only / Ventilation only: Air circulates without heating or cooling.
- Auto: Indoor unit automatically switches between heating and cooling based on setpoint.
- Defrost Operation: System automatically switches to defrost to prevent frost accumulation on the outdoor unit, stopping the supply air fan while the exhaust air fan resumes.
- Hot Start: Supply air fan stops, exhaust air fan resumes.
R32 Safety System: This system is active by default and can be temporarily deactivated for test runs or maintenance via specific VAM and EKVDX field settings.
External Inputs/Outputs: The unit supports external inputs for functions like forced stop or protective device input (T1/T2 terminals). For R32 refrigerant, T1/T2 are ONLY for fire alarm input, which has higher priority and shuts down the entire system. External outputs can be connected for alarms (e.g., R32 alarm).
Maintenance Features
Yearly Maintenance Checklist:
- Clean heat exchanger and drain pan to prevent contamination and blockages. Use proper field-supply cleaning agents suitable for heat exchangers and drain pans, following instructions carefully and avoiding household cleaning agents. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning.
- Run indoor units in fan-only operation for half a day to dry interiors.
- Clean casings of indoor units.
- Remove batteries from the user interface (if applicable).
- Check and remove blockages from inlet and outlet vents of indoor and outdoor units.
- Insert batteries in the user interface (if applicable).
Air Filter Cleaning: Turn off the unit before cleaning the air outlet. Clean with a soft cloth; for stubborn stains, use water or a neutral detergent.
Refrigerant Leakage Safety: The system includes a refrigerant leak detector. Airflow rate threshold levels are monitored, and errors (A6-30, A6-29, UJ-38, A6-28, UJ-37) are displayed if airflow drops, indicating potential R32 leakage. Actions required range from auto-recovery to contacting a dealer for filter cleaning, ducting checks, or system repair/reactivation.
Troubleshooting: The user interface displays error codes (e.g., 80-11 for R32 leak, CH-01 for R32 sensor malfunction, UJ-35 for VAM abnormality). A detailed troubleshooting guide is available in the service manual.
Disposal: Do NOT dismantle the system yourself. Dismantling, refrigerant, oil, and parts treatment MUST comply with applicable legislation. Units MUST be treated at a specialized treatment facility for reuse, recycling, and recovery.
Logbook: In Europe, EN378 provides guidance for a logbook to record maintenance, repair work, test results, and stand-by periods. Information for emergency shutdown and contact details for emergency services must be provided at an accessible location on the product.
