March 2013 Dell EqualLogic Configuration Guide v14.1 9-95
Table 38 M-Series I/O module Pass-Through to external switch infrastructure
M-Series I/O module Pass-Through to external switch infrastructure
Advantages Concerns
Fewer switch hops
Fewer switches to manage
SAN can support M1000e enclosures and rack or tower
stand-alone servers
SAN traffic isolated outside of M1000e enclosure
Less expensive that multi-tiered switch solution
Supports non-dell branded switching as a single vendor
solution
No firmware to update on the pass-through modules.
Complex cabling in a rack
environment.
Other Notes
Additional M1000e enclosures are added in similar fashion to diagram above
Supported with stacked or non-stacked external SAN infrastructures
This strategy works for a single fabric or dual fabric M-Series I/O module configuration (See
Section 0 for details)
This is the simplest choice if external switches are from a different vendor.
