Overview

The SPXFLOW HG Series Refrigerated Type Compressed Air Dryers, including models HG25, HG35, and HG50, are designed to remove liquid water from compressed air systems, thereby improving air quality and protecting downstream equipment. These dryers operate by cooling compressed air to a specific dew point, causing water vapor to condense into liquid, which is then separated and discharged.

Function Description:

The primary function of the HG Series dryers is to provide dry compressed air by utilizing a refrigeration cycle. Incoming compressed air first enters a heat exchanger where it is pre-cooled by the outgoing cold, dry air. It then passes through an evaporator (chiller) where a refrigerant further cools the air, causing water vapor to condense. This condensate is then removed by a separator equipped with an automatic drain valve. The cooled, dry air then returns through the heat exchanger, where it is reheated by the incoming warm air, preventing condensation in the downstream piping. An auxiliary condenser is also part of the refrigerant circuit. A color indicator provides a visual status of the dryer's operating conditions, typically showing red during initial startup and green during normal operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

The HG Series dryers are available in three models: HG25, HG35, and HG50, with varying capacities and power requirements.

  • Rated Capacity (scfm):

    • HG25: 25
    • HG35: 35
    • HG50: 50 (Rating conditions: 100°F inlet temperature, 100 psig inlet pressure, 100% inlet relative humidity, 100°F ambient temperature @ 60Hz. Per CAGI ADF-100.)
  • Inlet/Outlet Connections (inches): 3/4 for all models.

  • Dimensions (inches):

    • Height: 22.2 (all models)
    • Length: 15.5 (HG25, HG35), 19.7 (HG50)
    • Width: 14.5 (HG25, HG35), 19.7 (HG50)
  • Power Supply (V/Ph/Hz): 115/1/60 (all models).

  • Refrigerant Compressor Rating (hp):

    • HG25, HG35: 1/4
    • HG50: 1/3
  • Input Power (kW):

    • HG25, HG35: 0.47
    • HG50: 0.63
  • Refrigerant Type: R-134a (all models).

  • Minimum - Maximum Operating Conditions:

    • Inlet Air Pressure: 30 - 250 psig
    • Inlet Air Temperature: 40°F - 120°F
    • Ambient Temperature: 40°F - 110°F (Note: Continuous operation at the maximum and minimum operating conditions is not allowable.)

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Operation: The dryers are fully automatic and do not require auxiliary controls. They are designed to run continuously, even when compressed air demand is interrupted, without freezing up.
  • ON/OFF Switch: Located on the front panel with a running lamp to indicate power status.
  • Color Indicator: Provides a visual cue for dryer conditions. Red indicates initial startup or a potential issue, while green signifies normal operating temperature.
  • Electronic Drain Valve: Automatically discharges condensate. It features two indicators and a test button for verification. The drain opening time (0.5 to 10 seconds) and drain cycle time (0.5 to 45 minutes) are adjustable to minimize air losses.
  • Installation Requirements:
    • Must be installed indoors in a clean, well-ventilated area, away from corrosive vapors.
    • Ambient air temperature should be between 40°F and 100°F for optimal performance. Intermittent operation up to 113°F is permissible but may lead to higher dew points or shutdowns. Operation below 40°F is not recommended due to freeze-up risk.
    • Requires a level base and at least 6 inches of clearance from the front and condenser coil service access.
    • Should be installed downstream of an aftercooler or separator to ensure inlet air temperature does not exceed 120°F and is free of liquid water.
    • Piping connections must be rated for maximum operating pressure and supported to prevent stress on the dryer. Inlet and outlet shutoff valves and a bypass valve are recommended.
    • Electrical connections must comply with applicable codes and match the voltage, phase, and frequency listed on the serial number tag. Dryers are supplied with a cord and plug.

Maintenance Features:

The HG Series dryers require minimal routine maintenance for satisfactory operation.

  • Daily Maintenance: Check the separator for condensate discharge. If no discharge is evident, depressurize the unit and clean the strainer and/or solenoid valve of the electric drain.
  • Monthly Maintenance: Inspect and clean the condenser coils to remove accumulated dust and dirt using a soft brush or compressed air (limited to 30 psig).
  • Electronic Drain Valve Servicing: The drain valve body may require cleaning due to gross particulate contamination. Disassembly involves turning off power, disconnecting the main power supply, depressurizing the unit, and locking out/tagging the power supply. Internal parts should be inspected and cleaned, and the plunger assembly checked for free movement. The timer assembly should not be disassembled or repaired; if defective, it must be replaced.
  • Refrigeration System Maintenance: All refrigeration system maintenance should be performed by a competent refrigeration mechanic. It is crucial not to release fluorocarbon refrigerants into the atmosphere, as they must be recovered per EPA requirements.
  • Troubleshooting (Field Service Guide): A guide is provided to identify and remedy common problems such as water downstream of the dryer, excessive pressure drop, or the color indicator being out of the green zone. This guide helps diagnose issues like refrigerant compressor malfunction, drain failure, high inlet/ambient temperatures, fouled condensers, or improper expansion valve adjustment.
  • Warranty: The manufacturer warrants the product to be free from defects in material or workmanship for two years from the date of shipment, covering parts and labor. Heat exchangers are covered for an additional three years (total of five years) for parts only. Unauthorized service voids the warranty. Returns to the manufacturer require a return authorization number from the local distributor.
