Overview

This document is a diagnostic service manual for the Dometic WeatherPro and Oasis Elite power awnings, providing comprehensive instructions for troubleshooting, maintenance, and replacement of various components. It is intended for qualified service technicians to ensure proper and safe operation of the awning systems.

The Dometic WeatherPro and Oasis Elite awnings are sophisticated power awning systems designed for recreational vehicles, offering convenience and protection from the elements. These awnings extend and retract automatically, with advanced features like wind sensing and remote control operation. The WeatherPro model specifically incorporates a wind sensor that automatically retracts the awning during high wind conditions, enhancing safety and preventing damage. The Oasis Elite model also offers power operation and remote control capabilities.

Function Description:

The core function of these awnings is to provide shade and shelter, extending and retracting with ease through an integrated motor system. The WeatherPro model includes a wind sensor that monitors wind speed and automatically retracts the awning if it exceeds a preset threshold (typically 14-22 MPH), a crucial safety feature. Both models can be operated via a remote switch located inside the RV and, for the WeatherPro, a remote key FOB. An ignition interlock feature, present in the WeatherPro, prevents the awning from opening when the vehicle's ignition key is in the "on" position, safeguarding against accidental deployment during travel. The control box, the "heart" of the system, houses the circuit board, a rocker switch for manual operation, and a wind sensor toggle switch (for WeatherPro). It manages power distribution, interprets commands from the remote controls, and processes data from the wind sensor.

Usage Features:

  • Power Operation: Both awnings extend and retract electrically, eliminating manual effort.
  • Remote Control: The awnings can be operated using a remote switch inside the RV. The WeatherPro model also features a remote key FOB for convenient operation from outside the vehicle.
  • Wind Sensor (WeatherPro Only): This intelligent feature automatically retracts the awning in high winds, protecting it from damage. The wind sensor has an "ENABLE" and "DISABLE" toggle switch on the control box, allowing users to override the automatic retraction if desired (e.g., in calm conditions where the sensor might be triggered by non-wind factors).
  • Ignition Interlock (WeatherPro Only): A safety mechanism that prevents the awning from opening when the RV's ignition is on, ensuring the awning is not accidentally deployed while driving.
  • Auxiliary Cable: In case of RV 12VDC power failure, an auxiliary power cable can be connected to an external 12VDC source (like an automobile battery) to retract the awning, preventing it from being left open indefinitely.
  • Emergency Retract Procedure: A manual procedure is available to close the awning in emergencies, such as when power is unavailable or the system is inoperable. This involves using a pull strap and temporarily removing a bolt from the top casting to allow the FRTA (Fabric Roller Tube Assembly) to roll in.
  • Temperature Sensing: The wind sensor system also incorporates temperature sensing. If the ambient temperature is 30°F or less and the wind sensor is enabled, an alarm will sound, and the awning will not open. If already open, it will automatically close. This feature helps protect the awning in cold weather conditions.

Maintenance Features:

The manual provides detailed instructions for diagnosing and repairing various issues, emphasizing the importance of qualified service technicians for all repairs.

  • Wiring Diagnostics: Comprehensive checks for 12VDC supply, wiring connections between the control box and awning, motor connections, remote switch wiring, and wind sensor cable. This includes checking voltage outputs and continuity at various points in the system.
  • Control Box Troubleshooting: Instructions for checking the circuit board, rocker switch, and wind sensor toggle switch. This involves verifying voltage at specific pins and observing relay clicks to identify faulty components. The manual also describes how to interpret audible alarms from the control box, which often indicate wind sensor or cable issues.
  • Remote Key FOB Maintenance: Instructions for checking the key FOB battery and programming the key FOB to the control box.
  • Fabric, Roller Tube, Torsion Assembly & Weathershield Replacement: Detailed, step-by-step procedures for removing and replacing the awning fabric, roller tube, torsion assemblies, and weathershield. These procedures include critical safety warnings regarding spring tension in the torsion assemblies, which can be dangerous if not handled correctly.
  • Torsion Assembly Winding: Specific instructions for winding the left-hand torsion assembly, including the number of turns required for proper spring tension, which is crucial for the awning's smooth operation.
  • Component-Specific Checks: The manual outlines how to test individual components like the motor by applying direct DC voltage, and how to check the remote switches by listening for relay clicks in the control box.
  • Cable Testing: For the wind sensor cable, the manual recommends using a Dometic cable tester to check for defects, as standard telephone cables will not work due to polarity sensitivity.

The manual stresses the importance of safety throughout, particularly when dealing with the tensioned springs in the torsion assemblies, and advises against using bare hands to handle these components under tension. It also highlights the need for a clean and smooth work area when handling the fabric and roller tube to prevent damage.
