Overview

This document is an installation and owner's manual for an Electric Tankless Water Heater.

Function Description:

The electric tankless water heater is designed to provide hot water on demand, heating water as it flows through the unit rather than storing it in a tank. This differs from conventional storage water heaters. The temperature of the hot water delivered depends on the wattage of the heating element, the temperature of the incoming cold water, and the water flow rate through the heater. Reducing the flow rate increases the outlet temperature, while increasing it reduces the outlet temperature. The unit is equipped with both computer-controlled and electro-mechanical auto-resetting thermostat switches for high-limited temperature protection.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual covers two models: 3.5kW and 5.5kW.

  • Elements: Both models have 1 heating element.
  • Voltage: The 3.5kW model operates at 120V, while the 5.5kW model operates at 220V.
  • Max kW: 3.5kW for the 3.5kW model, and 5.5kW for the 5.5kW model.
  • Max Amperage Draw: 29 AMPS for the 3.5kW model, and 25 AMPS for the 5.5kW model.
  • Required Breakers: Both models require 1 x 30 AMP breaker.
  • Required Wire Gauge: Both models require 1 x 10 AWG wire.
  • Fittings: The water heater is supplied with ½” NPT fittings.
  • Maximum Operating Water Pressure: 150 PSI (1035 kPa). If water pressure is higher, a pressure reducing valve must be installed on the main incoming water supply line.
  • Activation Flow Rate: Approximately 0.3 GPM (1.1 LPM). The unit will not activate if the water flow rate is less than this level.
  • Recommended Clearances: 6" (304.8mm) above and below the heater, and 6" (152.4mm) in front of and to the sides of the heater. Flammable materials should be kept at least 24" (609.6mm) away from the water heater and the hot water outlet pipe.
  • Water Quality Levels: The manual provides a chart for recommended water quality levels, including pH (6.5-8.5), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) (Up to 500 mg/L), Free Carbon Dioxide (CO2) (Up to 500 mg/L), Total Hardness (Up to 200 mg/L), Aluminum (0.05 to 0.2 mg/L), Chloride (Up to 250 mg/L), Copper (Up to 1.0 mg/L), Iron (Up to 0.3 mg/L), Manganese (Up to 0.05 mg/L), and Zinc (Up to 5 mg/L). Water conditions outside these levels are not permitted and can damage the water heater, potentially voiding the warranty.
  • Aerator: An aerator supplied with the heater is 0.5 GPM / 1.9 LPM.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Must be installed indoors only and not in locations subject to freezing temperatures. Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician and a qualified plumber in accordance with all applicable codes. The unit should be secured to a solid, secure, and level mounting surface with 4 screws (minimum 1" (25.4mm) long). For ease of installation and servicing, it is recommended to install the product in an upright position with inlet and outlet water connections at the bottom.
  • Plumbing: Thoroughly flush the cold supply line of debris before connecting. Connect the HOT WATER line to the OUTLET (left side) and the COLD WATER line to the INLET (right side). After tightening, open several hot water faucets for 2-3 minutes to purge air from the lines before turning on power. This step is critical to prevent permanent damage to heating elements. Flexible water heater hoses are recommended. Manual shut-off valves (ball valves) on inlet and outlet are recommended for future maintenance. All water pipes or hoses within 3' (1m) of connections should be rated for high temperature applications (150°F (66°C) minimum).
  • Electrical: Requires 1 set of wire and ground. Each wire pair must be connected to its own individual double pole breaker. Wiring (wire gauge) and circuit protection (breakers) must comply with NEC (USA) or CEC (Canada). A separate ground conductor is required for each incoming circuit. All air must be purged from water lines before turning on power.
  • User Interface: The unit features a digital display for outlet temperature. It has a Power On/Off button, and buttons to increase (+) or decrease (-) the temperature. Holding the Power button allows switching between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
  • Safety: Water temperatures above 125°F (52°C) can cause severe burns or death from scalding. Children, disabled, and elderly individuals are at highest risk. Users should feel water before bathing or showering. Temperature limiting valves are available. A mixing valve complying with ASSE 1017 is recommended for reducing point-of-use water temperature. The outlet water temperature may be higher at low flow rates or with high inlet water temperature. Removing the cover to change the temperature set point exposes electrical shock and burn hazards; adjustments should only be made by a licensed plumber or electrician.
  • Troubleshooting: A dedicated section provides common problems, possible causes, and solutions, including issues with no heating, insufficient heating, or incorrect temperature at the faucet. Customer service contact information is provided for technical assistance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection: Inspect the connections on the inlet and outlet of the water heater annually for signs of damage or failure. Address any signs of damage, cracks, leakage, or weakness. Avoid over-tightening connections.
  • Air Purging: If any maintenance is performed on the water heater or the home's plumbing system that introduces air into the pipes, it is critical to turn off power to the water heater and purge the air from the lines before powering the unit back on. Failure to do so can cause permanent damage to the heating element and void the warranty.
  • Hard Water Treatment: If the water supply has a high level of mineralization (hard water), the heater exchanger should be flushed regularly to prevent scale build-up. A water treatment device or water softener should be installed to maintain optimal performance in hard water areas. The frequency of maintenance should be increased for hard water supplies.
