Overview

The EDCO KL-18 PRO Walk Behind Concrete Saw 18" is a commercial-grade flat saw designed for cutting horizontal concrete or asphalt slabs using diamond saw blades. This manual provides comprehensive information for its safe operation and maintenance.

Function Description:

The KL-18 is a powerful walk-behind concrete saw primarily used for wet or dry cutting of concrete and asphalt. It is designed for single-operator use from the rear of the saw. The machine allows for precise control over cutting depth through a handwheel knob, and it is crucial to maintain a straight blade path without forcing the blade to prevent strain on the engine/motor and ensure optimal cutting. For maximizing depth, cutting should be achieved in stepped increments of 1". The saw is equipped with a lifting bail for safe hoisting when needed.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Blade Size: 18 inches
  • Arbor Shaft Speed (unloaded): 3000 RPM
  • Wet Cutting Water Flow Rate: Approximately 2 gallons per minute (minimum)
  • Engine Type: Available with Honda GX390UT2QC9 (shown in manual) or Kohler CH440 engines.
  • Power Source: Gasoline-powered models are detailed, with references to electric models for general safety.
  • Weight: The machine is heavy, requiring proper lifting techniques or heavy-duty lifting devices for transport.
  • Noise Level: Exceeds 85dBA during normal use, necessitating ear protection.

Usage Features:

  • Depth Control Handwheel Knob: Located on the upper handle assembly, this knob allows the operator to raise or lower the saw blade. It must be unlocked to turn and locked once the desired cutting depth is reached.
  • Throttle Control: Used to bring the engine to full speed during operation and to idle when stopping the machine.
  • Engine Stop Switch: For gasoline models, this switch is used to turn off the engine.
  • Choke Control: Used for starting the engine, as per the engine manufacturer's manual.
  • Recoil Starter Grip: For manually starting the engine.
  • Lifting Bail: A designated point for lifting the machine using appropriate lifting devices.
  • Guide Bar: Assists in guiding the saw along the cutting line.
  • Wet Cutting System: Includes a coolant valve and hose connection for attaching a water supply, essential for cooling diamond blades and suppressing dust. An optional water tank kit (Part Number: 56310) is available for self-contained wet cutting.
  • Dry Cutting: Requires the use of a respirator and a dust control system to manage hazardous dust and fumes.
  • Blade Installation: Requires careful inspection of blades for damage (cracks, loose segments, out-of-round arbor holes) and ensuring proper alignment of the drive pinhole with the backing plate. The backing plate and blade cap must be of the same diameter and at least 1/4 the diameter of the blade for steel-centered diamond blades.
  • Safety Decals: Numerous safety symbols and labels are present on the machine, providing warnings for moving parts, hot surfaces, electrical hazards, heavy lifting, chemical/dust exposure, sharp components, hazardous pressures, and explosive vapors. Operators must read and understand these decals.
  • Operator's Manual and Engine Manufacturer's Owner's Manual: Essential to read and understand before operating the equipment.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Operators must wear appropriate PPE, including hard hats, safety shoes, hearing protection (exceeds 85dBA), and ANSI-approved safety glasses. Breathing protection (respirator) is required when grinding/cutting/drilling materials that generate crystalline silica dust.
  • Work Area Safety: Maintain a safe operating distance from flammable materials and other personnel. Block off the work area with roping or safety netting.
  • Blade Stalling: If the power source stalls in the cut, the blade must be raised completely, the power source disconnected, and the blade/flange nut/bolt inspected for damage.

Maintenance Features:

  • Daily Visual Inspection: Check the entire machine and hardware for tight fasteners, metal cracking/fatigue, damage to electrical wiring or fuel lines, and proper guard placement.
  • Engine Oil Check: Performed daily.
  • Blade and Arbor Shaft Inspection: Performed daily.
  • Guards Inspection: Performed daily.
  • Air Filter Element Cleaning: Performed daily.
  • Grease Bearings: Lubricate grease fittings every 4 hours of use.
  • Clean Dust and Dirt: Clean dust and dirt off the machine after operation.
  • Engine Oil Change: Performed as required.
  • Belt Inspection and Tensioning: Inspect belts as required. New equipment belts should be re-tensioned after the first four hours of use. Proper belt tension is crucial for power transmission and preventing overheating, shortened blade life, and bearing wear.
  • Spark Plug Replacement: Performed annually.
  • Authorized Service: Repairs are to be done by authorized EDCO Dealers only.
  • Online Support: EDCO provides online customer support, owner's manuals, parts listings, product training videos, and a QRC Training Decal on the product for easy access to information.
  • Warranty: A one-year limited equipment warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. Accessories manufactured by others carry their own warranties. EDCO reserves the right to modify products without obligation to update previously sold units. The warranty does not cover abuse, misuse, improper installation, maintenance, electrical failure, abnormal conditions, or unauthorized alterations.
