Congratulations on your purchase of the Nano Deluxe Memory Man.
Since its introduction in 1978, the Deluxe Memory Man has been
used on countless recordings and has become the gold standard
analog delay with its warm, pristine tone and reliable, musical
performance. This nano version of the Deluxe Memory Man is a
reissue of the original Deluxe Memory Man, with a few added features
for modern players.
Features Include:
t Added control over modulation with the addition of a Rate knob
t Internal switch to enable tails or true bypass
t High input impedance to preserve your guitar’s tone
t Powered from standard 9VDC, center-negative power supplies
t More compact, pedal-board friendly footprint
WARNING: This device comes equipped with an Electro-Harmonix 9.6DC-200 power sup-
ply. It requires 150mA at 9VDC with a center negative plug. Use of the wrong adapter or
a plug with the wrong polarity may damage the device and void the warranty. Do not
exceed 12VDC on the power plug. Power supplies rated for less than 150mA will cause
the device to act unreliably.

Overview

The Nano Deluxe Memory Man is an analog delay pedal with modulation capabilities, designed to provide warm, pristine tone and reliable, musical performance. It is a reissue of the original Deluxe Memory Man, incorporating additional features for modern players while maintaining the classic sound that has made its predecessor a gold standard in analog delay since 1978.

Function Description

The core function of the Nano Deluxe Memory Man is to produce analog delay effects, ranging from short slap-back echoes to long, atmospheric repeats. It achieves this through an analog delay block that processes the input signal and feeds a portion of it back into its input, creating multiple echoes. The pedal also integrates a modulation circuit, allowing users to add vibrato or chorus-style effects to the delayed signal, enhancing its sonic versatility.

The pedal's controls allow for precise shaping of the delay and modulation. The DELAY knob sets the delay time, offering a range from 30ms to 550ms. Turning this knob clockwise increases the delay time, and manipulating it while playing can generate unique pitch-shift effects, especially when the FEEDBACK is set high. The FEEDBACK knob controls the intensity of the delay repeats; higher settings produce more echoes and can lead to runaway oscillation for experimental sounds. When combined with short delay settings, high feedback can create a reverb-like effect.

The BLEND knob is crucial for mixing the dry and delayed signals, allowing users to go from 100% dry to 100% wet, or to find a balanced mix in between. This enables the pedal to be used for subtle enhancements or for completely transforming the sound with delay.

Modulation is controlled by the DEPTH and RATE knobs. The DEPTH knob adjusts the amount or width of the modulation, with clockwise turns increasing its intensity. The modulation is generated by a repeating Low-Frequency Oscillator (LFO) that sweeps the delay time. This can produce vibrato-style effects when the BLEND is set to maximum wet, or chorus-type effects when BLEND is set to the middle. Turning DEPTH fully counter-clockwise disables modulation. The RATE knob adjusts the speed of this modulation, with clockwise turns increasing the speed. This provides more granular control over the modulation compared to the original DMM's Chorus and Vibrato switch, though those classic settings can still be achieved by setting RATE to specific positions (9 o'clock for Chorus, 2 o'clock for Vibrato).

The LEVEL knob sets the input gain for the pedal, affecting both the wet and dry signals. This allows users to balance the volume between the effect and bypass modes, ensuring a consistent output level. An OVERLOAD LED indicates when the delayed signal begins to clip, providing visual feedback for gain staging.

Usage Features

The Nano Deluxe Memory Man is designed for ease of use and integration into a pedalboard. It features standard input and output jacks for connecting to a guitar and amplifier. The pedal is powered by a standard 9VDC, center-negative power supply, making it compatible with most pedalboard power setups.

A footswitch engages or bypasses the effect, with a STATUS LED indicating whether the effect is active. This provides clear visual feedback during live performance.

One notable feature is the internal TAILS switch, which offers a choice between true bypass and buffered bypass with "tails." When the TAILS switch is in the downward position (enabled), any delay echoes present when the effect is bypassed will continue to ring out naturally, creating a seamless transition. No new audio enters the delay block in this mode. When the switch is in the upward position (disabled), the effect instantly mutes upon bypass, providing true bypass functionality. By default, the pedal ships with TAILS disabled, offering true bypass. This flexibility allows users to choose the bypass mode that best suits their playing style and signal chain requirements.

The high input impedance of the pedal helps preserve the guitar's natural tone, preventing signal degradation when connected directly to the instrument. Its compact footprint also makes it more pedalboard-friendly, allowing it to fit into tighter spaces alongside other effects.

Maintenance Features

The device is designed for reliable operation with minimal maintenance. It is powered by an external power supply, eliminating the need for internal batteries. The internal TAILS switch, while accessible by removing the bottom cover, is generally a set-and-forget feature, not requiring frequent adjustment.

The construction is robust, intended to withstand the rigors of live performance and regular use. Should any issues arise, the manufacturer provides warranty information and customer service contacts for repair or replacement, ensuring long-term usability. Users are advised to register their product online to facilitate warranty claims. Proper use of the correct power supply is emphasized to prevent damage and maintain warranty validity.
