Why is there no reset action in my Emerson 4194HB and 4194HC Controllers?
    • R
      Robin MillerAug 8, 2025
For Emerson 4194HB and 4194HC controllers, the absence of reset action can stem from a plugged reset valve, a reset pressure leak, or a tubing leak. Turn the reset valve through its range several times to remove any restrictions. Adjust the output to 1.0 bar (15 psig) for a 0.2 to 1.0 bar (3 to 15 psig) output or 2.0 bar (30 psig) for a 0.4 to 2.0 bar (6 to 30 psig) output. Close the reset valve. If the output varies and no leaks were found in the rest of the feedback system (see Step 2.7), the reset valve is leaking. With reset valve positioned at 0.01 MIN/repeat put 1.0 bar (15 psig) to the output port. Using soap solution, check for leaks in the reset bellows and attached tubing assembly.

What to do if my Emerson Fisher 4194HA Controller process wanders or cycles about set point?
    • S
      Steven RiosAug 16, 2025
If your Emerson Controller's process wanders or cycles about the set point, it could be due to several factors. The proportional band and reset settings might be off, the supply pressure could be varying, or the process pointer might be rubbing on the cover or scale. A failure of the differential pressure unit, linkage failure, relay malfunction, or a differential relief valve set too low could also be the cause. Note if the pointer is bent. Check for links bent or not connected properly, or pivots broken. By changing the process differential pressure in the sensor and observing the output, verify that the output will move at about the same speed in both directions. Check by observing the controller reaction to a set point or load change under closed loop conditions.

Why Emerson Fisher 4194HA Controller remains at full output?
    • W
      William FosterAug 20, 2025
If your Emerson Controller remains at full output, the supply pressure might be too high, or the output gauge might not be functioning correctly. A differential pressure unit or linkage failure could also be the cause, as well as mechanical misalignment, a relay failure, or a restriction in the nozzle passage. The flapper could also be misaligned. Vary supply pressure to see if output gauge responds. Vary the process differential pressure and observe the flapper. Inspect the linkages for damage. Move the set point and verify that the nozzle is uncapped by the flapper. If not, inspect linkages for damage. Manually move flapper 1.6 mm (1/16 inch) from the nozzle. Manually push the flapper away from the nozzle. Controller output should go to 0 psig.

What causes abnormal control point shift when proportional band is changed in Emerson Controller?
    • A
      Ashley BanksSep 2, 2025
An abnormal control point shift when the proportional band is changed in your Emerson Controller can be caused by a dirty or pitted flapper, or the flapper being out of alignment. Inspect the flapper.

Why is my Emerson Fisher 4194HA Controller controlling off set point?
    • K
      Karl Bush IVNov 10, 2025
Your Emerson Controller might be controlling off set point due to several reasons. It could be due to the supply pressure not being set correctly, a misaligned flapper, or a linkage that is not aligned correctly. There might be a leak in the differential pressure unit or tubing, or the indicators could be out of calibration. Also, check for a linkage that is not connected correctly, a leak in the feedback system, or a leaking reset valve. A leak in the remote set point system could also be the cause. To resolve this, check the supply pressure with an external source. Inspect for loose screws, links or pivots. Open the reset valve to .01 minute/ repeat. Adjust output pressure to 1.4 bar (20 psig). Using soap solution, check for leaks in the proportional and reset bellows in the tubing that ...

How to fix Emerson Fisher 4194HA Controller that will not attain full output range?
    • J
      johnsonpaulNov 24, 2025
If your Emerson Controller will not attain full output range, it could be due to a few reasons. The output pressure gauge might not be functioning correctly, the supply pressure might not be correct, or the proportional band setting might be too wide (4194HA controllers only). It could also be due to a differential pressure unit or linkage failure, a leak in the nozzle pressure tubing, or a relay malfunction. Measure the output with an external pressure gauge. Adjust proportional band setting to 10. Manually cap the nozzle. Output should increase. Inspect the linkages for misalignment, loose screws, and damaged links or pivots. Using soap solution, check for leaks. Using soap solution, check for leaks in the nozzle tubing assembly. Manually push the flapper away from the nozzle. The output...

Why Emerson Controller remains at zero output?
    • C
      Christopher WhiteheadDec 1, 2025
If your Emerson Controller remains at zero output, the gauge might not be functioning, or there could be a differential pressure unit or linkage failure. Mechanical misalignment, a relay malfunction, or a nozzle pressure leak could also be the cause. Verify that the supply pressure is at its correct value and that the controller output is zero. Vary the process differential pressure and observe the flapper. Inspect the sensor and linkages for damage. Move the set point and verify that the nozzle can be capped by the flapper. If not, inspect linkages and flexures for damage. With the supply pressure on, check for a low flow of air at the nozzle output. When capped, the output pressure should build rapidly. The relay should open and pass a large flow of air through the 'OUTPUT' nipple. Check...
