Overview

The Eureka Jasper Freestanding wood heater is designed to provide efficient and safe heating, meeting Australian and New Zealand standards AS/NZS 4012:2014 & AS/NZS 4013:2014 for emissions and efficiency. This manual outlines its installation, operation, and maintenance, emphasizing safety and optimal performance.

Function Description:

The Eureka Jasper is a wood-burning heater designed for residential use, providing warmth through the combustion of seasoned hardwood. It features a cast iron door, a two-component baffle system, and firebricks to ensure proper operation and prevent damage to the firebox. The heater incorporates upper and lower air slides to control the burn rate and heat output, allowing users to adjust the fire to their desired intensity. Its design aims to minimize wood consumption and reduce smoke emissions, making it an environmentally conscious heating solution.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Warranty: The firebox is warranted for ten years against defects in workmanship and/or materials. The paint finish and all other components (excluding glass, fire brick lining, or baffle plates damaged by impact) are warranted for 12 months.
  • Flue Requirements: The heater must be installed with either a Standard 6" Decromesh Default Flue Kit (including an additional 900mm high x 180-degree stainless steel rear flue shield) or a 6" Half Shield Default Kit (Double Sleeve Flue Kit). The flue pipe must extend at least 4.6m above the top of the floor protector. Installation must comply with AS/NZS 2918:2018.
  • Clearances to Combustibles: Minimum clearances to combustible materials (plaster, wallpaper, timber, MDF, etc.) are specified in Table A. For parallel installation, these include:
    • Dimension A: 30mm
    • Dimension B: 820mm
    • Dimension C (From base of foot): 670mm
    • Dimension D: 1140mm
    • Dimension E: 825mm
    • Dimension F: 200mm
    • Dimension G: 550/425mm (with additional side wing heat shields)
    • Dimension H: 1273/1148mm (with additional side wing heat shields)
    • Dimension I: 1853/1728mm (with additional side wing heat shields) For corner installation, the dimensions are slightly different for E, F, G, H, and I. If surrounded by non-combustible materials (brick, stone, concrete, cement sheet), wall clearances can be reduced to 50mm to ensure room air circulation.
  • Hearth & Floor Requirements: If installed on a combustible floor, a non-combustible hearth (cement sheet or similar) must be placed between the appliance and the floor. Minimum hearth requirements are specified in Table A.
  • Baffle System: Comprises an 8mm Upper Baffle Plate and a 6mm Lower Baffle Plate. These are critical for efficiency and heat output.
  • Firebricks: The heater uses two sizes of firebricks: 155mm x 310mm (QTY 2) and 205mm x 310mm (QTY 8), installed with a firebrick retainer.
  • Paint: The heater is painted in Stove Bright Metallic Black - Paint code 6309.

Usage Features:

  • Lighting the Fire: Place a firelighter in the center of the firebox, then build a criss-cross pattern of dry kindling (around 2cm thick, 25cm long) at least half the firebox height. Place 3-4 larger wood pieces (around 6cm thick, 25cm long) on top. Ensure both air slides are fully open (to the right) before igniting the firelighter and closing the door once ignition begins. The door should not be left ajar.
  • Daily Operations: In the morning, open both air slides to start embers glowing. Place 3-4 pieces of wood on embers and close the door. After 20 minutes or once wood is well alight, close the lower air slide and adjust the upper air slide for desired heat output.
  • Refuelling: During normal operation, it's not necessary to open the lower air slide unless the fire has died down. Leaving the lower air slide open for extended periods can lead to over-firing.
  • Wood Type: Best results are achieved with hardwood logs 9-15cm in diameter and 25cm long, with a moisture content between 14-16%. Place logs front to rear in the firebox for good air circulation and to prevent rolling against the door glass.
  • Overnight Burn: Approximately 30 minutes before an overnight burn, load the heater with larger pieces of wood. Leave the upper air slide open for 30 minutes to reduce wood moisture. Then, set the air control to the desired setting. Modern heaters cannot be shut down overnight as easily as older ones; excessive shutdown can lead to smoke emissions and creosote formation. The goal is to have a few hot embers left in the morning, not large lumps of wood.
  • Paint Curing: For the first two or three firings, never exceed Medium air setting and do not load the fire more than half full. Use softwood fuel only for kindling. Ensure the lower air slide is fully closed once the fire is established during curing. Some smoke and oils may be detected during initial fire-up; ensure good ventilation. Do not wipe the heater while paint is curing.

Maintenance Features:

  • Flue Maintenance: It is recommended to seek the services of a licensed plumber annually or more frequently if the heater is operated for more than six months of the year. This involves removing baffles, cleaning the flue with a 150mm flue brush, and then re-fitting components.
  • Baffle System Inspection: Baffles should be inspected at least once a year (more often if used frequently) for deformation, bowing, or holes. Damaged baffles must be replaced as they are critical for efficiency and can lead to premature wear of the heater.
  • Door Seal Maintenance: Periodically check the door seal to ensure it seals against the firebox face. If worn or damaged, it needs replacement. To replace, remove the door, scrape old glue, clean the rope channel, apply high-temp silicone, press in new 14mm OD door rope, and re-fit the door. Leave the door closed for at least 12 hours for the silicone to cure.
  • Glass Cleaning: Typically needed after a long overnight burn. If a wet, sticky black film (creosote) forms, burn the heater normally for a load or two with the upper air slide fully open to burn off moisture. Once cooled, use a damp cloth with water or glass cleaner. Wet ash and newspaper can be used for stubborn stains. Avoid contact of glass cleaner with paintwork.
  • Door Glass Replacement: Remove the door, then remove the retaining screws and panels for the upper and lower air plate assemblies and glass. Fit new fiberglass tape to the outer edge of the replacement glass, then re-fit the panels and assemblies, ensuring proper alignment and movement of air slides. High-temperature silicone may be needed under the door rope if it has dislodged.
  • Adjusting the Door Handle: Open the door, remove the retaining screw with an M 2.5 hex key. Rotate the handle counter-clockwise to tighten the door catch or clockwise to loosen it, then re-fit the screw.
  • Paint Finish Care: After curing, wipe with a soft cloth (with water if necessary). Do not use commercial cleaners or solvents. Touch-up paint is available from Eureka dealers.
