Overview

This document describes the Fire Sense Pro Series Patio Heater, models 61159 and 61436, providing comprehensive information on its function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The Fire Sense Pro Series Patio Heater is a combustion appliance designed for outdoor heating. It operates using propane gas, providing radiant heat to an outdoor area. The heater is intended for use with a propane vapor withdrawal supply system and is designed to produce extremely minute, non-hazardous amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) when used and maintained according to instructions. It features an electronic ignition system, requiring one AAA battery for operation. The heater is equipped with a reflector to direct heat, a head assembly containing the burner, a tank housing for the propane cylinder, a post, and a base, which may include a pre-installed sandbox for stability. Some models (e.g., 61436) feature a multi-panel reflector for easier assembly and potentially broader heat distribution.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: Propane gas.
  • Propane Cylinder: Standard 20 lb. propane cylinder (sold separately), equipped with a listed over-filling prevention device and a collar to protect the cylinder valve.
  • Minimum Supply Pressure: 0.5 psi for input adjustment of propane gas.
  • Ignition: Electronic ignition, requires 1 AAA battery (installed by unscrewing the RED IGNITER BUTTON).
  • Reflector: Model 61159 has a 1-piece reflector; Model 61436 has a 5-piece reflector (4 panels and 1 center cap).
  • Clearances from Combustible Materials: Minimum 3 feet (36 inches) from the top and 2 feet (24 inches) from the sides.
  • Operating Temperature: Unit will operate at reduced efficiency below 40°F.
  • Assembly Time: Approximately 60 minutes.
  • Tools Required (NOT included): Phillips screwdriver w/medium blade, adjustable wrench (2), leak test solution.
  • Materials: Stainless steel models benefit from high-quality automobile wax for exterior surface maintenance (excluding emitter screen or domes).

Usage Features:

  • Outdoor Use Only: The heater is strictly for outdoor use and must not be operated inside a building, garage, or any other enclosed area due to carbon monoxide hazard and oxygen consumption.
  • Gas Connection: Connects to a standard 20 lb. propane cylinder via a regulator and gas hose. Connections must be hand-tightened and then securely tightened with a wrench.
  • Leak Testing: A crucial step before initial use and after any gas connection is loosened or removed. A solution of soapy water is applied to connections; bubbles indicate a leak. Leak tests must be performed outdoors, away from open flames and smoking.
  • Lighting Procedure:
    1. Turn the control knob to "OFF" (9 o'clock position).
    2. Fully open the LP cylinder valve.
    3. For initial start or after cylinder change, hold the control knob in for 2 minutes to purge air.
    4. Turn the control knob to align the calibration mark halfway between the small and large flame symbols.
    5. Depress the control knob, then push the RED igniter button to ignite the main burner. Hold until burner ignites (approx. 30 seconds), then release.
  • Flame Adjustment: Turn the control knob clockwise for a larger flame, counter-clockwise for a smaller flame.
  • Shut Down: Depress the control knob and turn clockwise to "OFF." Turn the cylinder valve clockwise to "OFF" and disconnect the regulator when not in use.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Never leave the heater unattended when hot or in use.
    • Keep children and flammable materials away from hot surfaces.
    • Do not hang clothing or other flammable materials on or near the heater.
    • Ensure adequate clearances from combustibles.
    • Do not store propane near high heat, open flames, or where temperatures exceed 120°F (49°C).
    • Propane cylinders should be stored outdoors in a well-ventilated space, out of reach of children, and never in an enclosed area.
    • Do not attempt to manually ignite the heater by holding the control knob for more than 10 seconds before igniting, as this can cause a ball of flame.
    • Heater will be hot after use; handle with care.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: The heater should be thoroughly inspected before each use and annually by a qualified service person.
  • Cleaning Exterior Surfaces: Use soapy water; avoid flammable or corrosive cleaning agents. Keep the burner and control compartment dry.
  • Airflow Maintenance: Ensure controls, burner, and circulating air passageways are clean and unobstructed. Signs of blockage include gas odor with extreme yellow flame, heater not reaching desired temperature, uneven glow, or popping noise.
  • Burner Cleaning: Spiders and insects can nest in burner orifices. Clean burner holes with a heavy-duty pipe cleaner or compressed air.
  • Carbon Deposits: Clean dome and burner screen with warm soapy water if carbon deposits develop.
  • Hose Assembly Inspection: Inspect for excessive abrasion, cuts, or wear. Replace if leaks are suspected.
  • Corrosion: In salt-air environments, check frequently for corroded areas and repair promptly.
  • Storage:
    • Between uses: Turn control knob OFF, disconnect LP source.
    • Store upright in an area sheltered from inclement weather.
    • Cover the heater to protect exterior surfaces and air passages.
    • Do not leave the LPG tank exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat.
    • Wait until the heater is cool before covering.
  • Service: Only a qualified service person should repair gas passages and associated components. Always allow the heater to cool before attempting service.
  • Warranty: The Fire Sense Pro or Lux Series Heater comes with a 1-year warranty on materials and workmanship under normal use, and a limited lifetime warranty on the head/burner unit for defects in material and workmanship under normal use. Warranty extension for an additional year is available upon product review at balkenehome.com within 365 days of purchase.
