Do you have a question about the Fluke 116 Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Fluke Model 116 is a battery-powered, true-rms multimeter with a 6000-count display and a bar graph, designed for use in fixed-equipment installations at the distribution level, meeting CAT III IEC 61010-1 2nd Edition safety standards.

Function Description

The Fluke 116 offers a wide range of measurement functions, including:

  • AC/DC Voltage: Measures both alternating and direct current voltages. The Auto-V LoZ function automatically selects AC or DC voltage based on the sensed input with a low impedance input, which helps reduce false readings from ghost voltages.
  • AC/DC Millivolts: Measures millivolt-level AC and DC signals.
  • Resistance (Ohms): Measures electrical resistance.
  • Continuity: Checks for opens and shorts in circuits, with an audible beeper for quick verification.
  • Temperature: Measures temperature using a K-type thermocouple.
  • Diode Test: Tests diodes for proper functionality.
  • Capacitance: Measures capacitance.
  • AC/DC Microamps: Measures microamp-level AC and DC currents.
  • Frequency (Hz): Measures the frequency of a signal.

Usage Features

  • Unsafe Voltage Alert: The 4 symbol is displayed when the Meter measures a voltage ≥30 V or an overload (OL) condition, alerting the user to potentially hazardous voltages.
  • Battery Saver ("Sleep Mode"): The Meter automatically enters sleep mode after 20 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life. It can be awakened by any button press or rotary switch turn. Sleep mode is disabled in MIN MAX AVG mode.
  • MIN MAX AVG Recording Mode: This mode captures minimum and maximum input values (ignoring overloads) and calculates a running average of all readings. A beep sounds when a new high or low is detected. The mode can be paused and resumed without erasing stored values.
  • Display HOLD: Freezes the current display reading. A warning is provided to remind users that the display will not change when a different voltage is applied in this mode.
  • Backlight: Toggles the backlight on and off. It automatically turns off after 40 seconds but can be disabled by holding the backlight button while turning the Meter on.
  • Manual and Autoranging: The Meter offers both Autorange (best resolution) and Manual Range modes. The range can be manually incremented.
  • Power-Up Options: Specific functions (e.g., disabling beeper, enabling low impedance capacitance measurements, disabling sleep mode, disabling auto backlight off) can be activated by holding down a specific button while turning the Meter on.
  • Low Impedance Capacitance Measurements: For cables with ghost voltage, the Meter can be switched into LoZ Capacitance mode by holding RANGE while turning the Meter on. This mode has lower accuracy and dynamic range and is not saved when the Meter is turned off or goes into sleep mode.
  • Measuring Current above 600 µA: The millivolt and voltage functions can be used with an optional mV/A output Current Probe for currents exceeding the Meter's rating.
  • Bargraph: Functions like an analog meter, updating faster than the digital display, useful for making peak and null adjustments. It includes an overload indicator (►) and a polarity indicator (+). The bargraph is disabled for capacitance and temperature measurements. For frequency, it indicates the underlying AC voltage up to 1 kHz.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Replacement: The manual provides clear instructions for safely replacing the 9V battery, including removing test leads and the battery door.
  • Cleaning: The case can be wiped with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Users are advised not to use abrasives, isopropyl alcohol, or solvents to clean the case top or lens/window, as dirt or moisture in the terminals can affect readings.
