5 USING YOUR PROGRAMMABLE
POWER SUPPLY
5.1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter contains functional information about usin
g
your pro
g
rammable power
supply (PPS). It covers basic information, such as connectin
g
a load to an output
channel, and more advanced information such as the followin
g
:
1) Connectin
loads in parallel to an output channel.
2) Connectin
output channels in series to a load to increase the maximum
output volta
e or connectin
them in parallel to a load to increase the output
current.
This chapter also contains information about main operatin
g
features and
describes how to use those features. You can use your pro
g
rammable power
supply in one of the followin
g
ways:
1) In a system environment, via a system controller (PC + IEEE interface). This
is called "remote operation".
2) As a bench-top instrument, usin
the front panel keys, indicators and display.
This is called "local operation".
Each output channel of the power supply is a dc power source with controlled
limits for power, volta
g
e, and current. An output channel can operate as a
constant volta
g
e (CV) source, as a constant current (CC) source, or as a constant
current (CC) sink (PM283x only) dependin
g
on volta
g
e/current settin
g
s and load
conditions. The maximum output volta
g
e or current is limited by the followin
g
:
1) The maximum volta
e and current cannot exceed the output channel-specific
limits.
2) The product of volta
e and current cannot exceed the output channel-specific
power limit accordin
to the formula Vset x Iset
Pmax.
For output limits, refer to section 5.5.1 "Output channel ratin
g
s and
characteristics".
CAUTION: You may turn on your power supply if you are sure that the
installation instructions as described in Chapter 3 have been
followed. The power supply is ready for use within a few seconds
after power-up. After a warm-up time of 30 minutes, your power
supply meets the specifications listed in the Reference Manual.
