With the par.ting brake applied. jack up
and
sup-
pott
one
front wheel
and
block the other
three
wheels.
Remove
the
cap,
Figure 44, split pin,
nut,
thrust
washer
and the outer bearing.
Remove
the
complete
w~l
and
hub
assembly
and ex.tract the
grease
retainer
and
inner bearing.
Thoroughly clean all
pans
in a suitable solvent
and
allow to dry.

WARNING:
Do
not
use
solvents
in a
confined
space.
Work
in a
well
ventilated
Inspect
the
bearings
and
both bearing cups
in
the
wheel
hub
for
discoloration
or
wear.
Repack
the
bearings and the space between the
two
bearing
cups
with grease.
Grease
the axle
shaft.
Re-assemble using a new grease retainer seal
and
tighten the castellated nut to
25
lbf.
ft

Rotate the
wheel
hub
three
to
six
revolutions
in
a
clockwise direction. Further tighten the castel-
lated nut to
SO
lbf.
ft

Nm).
Now
slacken
the

Flywheel
access
hole

Cover plate
nut

slots.
If
the hole in the axle shaft does not
align with
a slot in the nut,
tum
the nut
in
a clock-
wise
direction just sufficient to align the hole with
the nearest slot
Install a new split
pin
and
replace the hub cap.
Repeat
the procedure on
the
other front wheel.
45. Starter Motor Pinion
Disconnect
the
cable
from
the
battery ground
ter-
minal
and
the
battery
cables
from
the
starter
motor
and
solenoid.
Extract the
three
securing bolts and
remove
the starter
motor.
Examine the staner pinion for clutch dust con-
tamination
and,
if
necessary,
brush
clean
with a
so-
lution
of
75%
kerosene
and
25%
lubricating
oil.
This mixture will provide sufficient lubrication for
the pinion until the next 600 hour service.
NOTE:
This
operation
should
be
carried
out
more
frequently
if
the
clutch
is
subject
to
heavy
useage.
