If the drive wheels:
R
spin on one or both sides of the vehicle,
ASR is activated automatically.
R
spin on one side, ASR brakes them automat-
ically.
R
spin on both sides,ASR automatically
reduces the engine's poweroutput.
If ASR intervenes:
R
the À indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster flashes
R
you cannot activate cruise control
R
and cruise control has already been activa-
ted, it willremain active. It is not possible to
accelerate or decelerate using cruise con-
trol.
X
Turn the key to the drive positioninthe igni-
tion lock.
The À indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster lights up and goes out after approx-
imately2seconds. ASR is activated.
If the À indicator lamp does not go out,
then ASR has amalfunction. Have the cause
of the malfunction rectified at aqualified
specialist workshop.
Deactivating/activating ASR
G
WARNING
If deactivated, ASR willnot attempt to stabi-
lize the vehicle during pulling awayand
acceleration. There is an increased risk of
skidding and of an accident.
Only deactivate ASR in the situations descri-
bed in the following.
Traction control (ASR function) is part of Sta-
bility Control Assist. If you deactivate Stability
Control Assist, traction control is also deacti-
vated (Y page 117).
Stability Control Assist
Function and notes
Stability Control Assist monitors handling and
traction, i.e. powertransmission between the
tires and the road surface. If it detects that the
vehicle is deviating from the direction desired
by the driver, one or more wheelsare braked
to stabilise the vehicle. The engine outputmay
also be modified to keep the vehicle on the
desiredcourse within physical limits. Stability
Control Assist can also stabilise the vehicle
during braking or in critical driving situations,
e.g. sudden swerving or fast cornering.
Stability Control Assist is operational at
speedsabove approximately 12 mph
(20 km/h)regardless of the operating status
of the service brake or continuous brake. If
Stability Control Assist intervenes, the Á
indicator lamp in the instrument cluster
flashes.
If you fail to adapt yourdriving style or if you
are inattentive, Stability Control Assist can nei-
ther reduce the risk of an accident nor over-
ride the lawsofphysics. Stability Control
Assist is only an aid,and you are always
responsible for the distance to the vehicle in
front, for vehicle speed and for braking in good
time. Alwaysadapt yourdriving style to the
prevailing road and weather conditions and
maintain asufficient, safe distance from other
road users. Drive carefully.
When the engine is running and the Á indi-
cator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up
permanently,Stability Control Assist is mal-
functioning. Have Stability Control Assist
checked at aqualifiedspecialist workshop.
Regardless of the vehicle load or road surface
conditions, Stability Control Assist reduces the
risk that the vehicle:
R
skids
R
jack-knifes
R
tips
Stability Control Assist stabilises the tractor/
semitrailer combination or drawbar combina-
tion using the following automatic control
interventions:
R
engine outputreduction
R
targeted braking of individual wheelsonthe
vehicle
R
braking of the entire vehicle
Deactivating/activating Stability Con-
trol Assist
G
WARNING
If you deactivate Stability Control Assist,
Stability Control Assist does not stabilize the
vehicle. There is an increased risk of skid-
ding and accidents.
