DEF shouldnot come into contact with skin,
eyes or clothing, and shouldnot be swallowed.
KeepDEF outofthe reach of children.
If youcome into contact with DEF, observe the
following:
R
Immediately wash DEF fromyourskinwith
water and soap.
R
If DEF comesinto contact with your eyes,
rinse your eyes with clean water immedi-
ately.Consult adoctor withoutdelay.
R
If youhaveswallowed DEF, immediately
rinse your mouth with water and drink
plenty of water. Consult adoctor without
delay.
R
Immediately change outofclothing which
hascome into contact with DEF.
DEF is not refilledaspartofthe maintenance
work. Therefore,refillthe tank regularly during
vehicleoperationoratthe latest when the first
event message is displayedinthe on-board
computer.
Youcan find furtherinformationonDEF under
"Service products" (Y page 203).
Before filling the tank
DEF tank (example: singletank)
Youcan recognize DEF tank ; by blue
cap :.IfDEF tank ; still contains sufficient
DEF, pressure compensation mayresultwhen
unscrewing cap :.DEF mayspill outasa
result. Therefore,remove DEF tank cap :
carefullyfromDEF tank ;.IfDEF spills out,
immediatelywashthe affectedareawith
plenty of water.
Aspecial tank fillerneck prevents DEF tank ;
frommistakenly being filledwithdieselfuel.

Switch off the engine.

Apply the parkingbrake.

Switch off the auxiliary heating system
(Y page 63).
Alwaysfillthe tank with at least1.4 US gal
(5 Liter)asaddingsmaller amounts could
resultinmalfunctions.

Before the journey

At verylow outside temperatures, make
sure thatthe engine oiladded is of an
appropriate SAE classification. Using engine
oils thatare not suitablefor verylow outside
temperatures mayresultinengine damage.
Before every journey,remove accumulated
snow and ice fromthe vehicle.
Before the onsetofwinter, make sure that:

the coolant contains sufficient antifreeze
(Y page 200)
R
the fuel used is suitablefor winter use
(Y page 202)
R
the oilischangedingoodtime if single-
grade engine oilisbeing used (Y page 199)
R
the windshieldwashercleaning system con-
tains sufficient antifreeze (Y page 162)
R
there aresnow chains in the vehicle
R
suitablewinter tiresare installed
In wintry conditions, the lawmay require that
winter tiresbeinstalledonthe wheels of the
drive axle. Find outwhich winter tiresare suit-
able for your needs.Observe country-specific
laws.

Liquid or gaseous startingaidsreact imme-
diately with fuel vapors and arehighlyflam-
