It is particularly important to observe the
describedorder when connecting and dis-
connecting the jumper cables.

Never connect or disconnect the battery
terminals whilethe engine is running.
Observe the safety notes on handling batter-
ies.
Before disconnecting and connecting the bat-
teries:

Remove the key from the ignition lock.
X
Switch off all electrical consumers.
Disconnecting
X
Remove the battery compartment cover.
X
Disconnect the negative terminal clamp
first, and then disconnect the positive termi-
nal clamp.
Connecting
X
Connect the positive terminal clamp first,
and then connect the negative terminal
clamp.
Do not interchange the battery terminals.
X
Replace the battery compartment cover.
Carry out the following tasks after an interrup-
tion to the powersupply or after reconnecting
the batteries:
X
Deactivate anti-theft protection on the audio
equipment (radio) .
X
Set the switch-on time for the auxiliary heat-
ing system (Y page 63).

Tighten the battery carrier screws with a
tightening torque of 15 lb-ft (20 Nm).Donot
use an impact wrench. Otherwise,you could
damage the threaded connection.

Checking the battery fluid level

Tap water reduces the electrical perform-
ance of the battery. Only refill with distilled
or de-ionized water.
Do not use ametal funnel to refill.The metal
funnel could cause ashort circuit and the
batteries could be damaged.
Battery fluidlevel (example: right-hand battery)
Observe the safety notes on handling batter-
ies.

Check the battery fluidlevel as regularly as
required by the vehicle operating conditions,
and at least once ayear.

Remove the battery compartment cover.

Vehicleswith batteries installedone above
the other: remove the batteries.

Unscrew the cell caps.
X
Check the battery fluidlevel.
The battery fluidmust be betweenminimum
fill level mark ; and maximum fill level
mark : in each battery cell.

Refill with distilled/de-ionized water.
X
Refitthe plugs.
X

the other: install the batteries.

Replace the battery compartment cover.
Charging the batteries

WARNING
During charging and jump-starting, explosive
gases can escape from the battery. There is
arisk of an explosion.
Particularly avoid fire, open flames,creating
sparks and smoking. Ensure there is suffi-
cient ventilation whilecharging and jump-
starting. Do not leanover abattery.

WARNING
Adischarged battery can freeze at tempera-
tures belowfreezing point. When jump-start-
ing the vehicle or charging the battery,
