Excessive tire pressure leadsto:
R
an increased braking distance
R
adeteriorationintire traction
R
increased tire wear
The valve capsonthe tire valvesprotect the
valve coresfrommoisture and dirt. Always
screwthe valve capstightlyonto the tire
valves.
In the event of repeated pressure loss in the
tires, externaldamageorleaking tire valves
maybethe cause. Check the condition of the
tiresregularly.
Furtherinformationontire pressure can be
found in the "Tire pressure" section
(Y page 195).
Tire tread
G
WARNING
If there is insufficient tire tread, the tire trac-
tiondecreases.The tire treadisnolonger
able to dissipate water. Thisincreases the
riskofhydroplaning when the roadsurface
is wet, particularly when the vehicle's speed
is not adapted to the roadconditions. There
is ariskofanaccident.
When the tire pressure is too high or too
low, tiresmay wear differentlyatdifferent
points on the tire tread. Therefore, regularly
check the tire treaddepth and the condition
of the treadacross the wholewidth of all
tires.
Minimum tire treaddepth on:
R
Summer tires: 3mm
R
M+S tires: 4mm
For safety reasons,havethe tiresreplaced
beforetheyreach the legallyprescribedmin-
imumtire treaddepth.
G
WARNING
There is adangerofhydroplaning occurring,
evenifyou aredrivingslowly and your tires
have sufficient treaddepth,depending on
the depth of water on the road. There is a
riskofanaccident.
For thisreason, avoidtire ruts and brake
carefully.
:
Example: tire treadwearindicator (sum-
mer tires)
Aspecifiedminimumtreaddepth is alegal
requirement for alltires. Observe the legal
requirements for the country youare currently
in.
The less tire treaddepth remaining, the poorer
the roadgripand handling characteristics of
the vehicle, particularly if the roadsurface is
wetorsnow-covered.
Atire hasreachedthe minimumtreaddepth
when the treadwearindicator (arrow) is flush
with the tire tread.
For safety reasons,havethe tiresreplaced
beforethe legallyspecifiedminimumtread
depth is reached.

WARNING
Damaged tirescan cause tire inflation pres-
sure loss. As aresult, youcould lose control
of your vehicle. There is ariskofaccident.
Check the tiresregularly for signs of dam-
ageand replace any damagedtiresimmedi-
ately.
Before startingyourjourney,check the tire
