The Furuno FI-50 series is a collection of navigation instruments designed for both sailing and power boat vessels, providing precise information to enhance safety at sea. These instruments are built to withstand harsh conditions and offer a variety of data displays, from wind and depth to speed and navigation.
The FI-50 series includes several distinct instruments, each tailored to specific navigational needs:
FI-501 (WIND): This instrument displays apparent and true wind angle in both analog and digital formats. It requires connection to a FI-5001/5001L wind transducer or other CAN bus wind measurement devices. It provides data such as apparent and true wind speed and angle, maximum true wind speed, maximum/low true wind speed alarm, high/low apparent wind angle alarm, Beaufort wind speed, and VMG to windward.
FI-502 (CH WIND): The FI-502 specializes in detailed and precise wind bearing measurements, covering a range from 60 degrees Port to 60 degrees Starboard. This is particularly useful for close-hauled points of sail, helping sailors optimize their course relative to the wind. It displays the same wind-related data as the FI-501.
FI-503 (DIGITAL): This instrument offers a comprehensive digital display of critical navigation data on a 3-way split screen. It shows current depth, shallow/deep alarm, shallow/deep anchor alarm, wind angle, high/low apparent wind angle, boat speed (STW, SOG, MAX/AVG), VMG to windward, wind speed (MAX true wind, MAX/LOW true wind speed alarm, Beaufort wind speed), log, trip, count up/down timer, water temperature, air temperature, air pressure, humidity, wind chill temperature, and dew point.
FI-504 (MULTI) and FI-507 (MULTI XL): These instruments feature large digital displays that present all available information from the CAN bus network. They offer an alternating data display mode, switching between user-selected information in 3-second intervals. Data displayed includes all information available on the FI-50 series, navigation data (bearing/distance to waypoint, XTE, waypoint number/name, latitude/longitude, satellites tracked, roll & pitch), environmental data (battery voltage, time & date), and engine data (trip fuel used, fuel consumption, engine RPM). The FI-507 is a larger, XL version of the FI-504.
FI-505 (COURSE PILOT): This instrument provides a digital compass readout with an analog "Off Course" needle, which is invaluable for maintaining a desired course. When connected to a satellite compass, it also displays smooth and precise Rate Of Turn (ROT) of the boat via the analog needle, which can also be used to verify autopilot steering performance. It displays current heading, locked heading, average heading, course over ground, and ROT.
FI-506 (RUDDER): When connected to an autopilot, the FI-506 Rudder Angle Display shows precise rudder angle information, helping the helmsman maintain control.
The system also integrates with various sensors and accessories:
The FI-50 series is designed for ease of use and integration:
While specific maintenance features are not extensively detailed, the design principles suggest ease of maintenance:
