Overview

This document provides installation instructions and important safety information for the Garmin LiveScope™ Ice Fishing Bundle. It covers the assembly of the ice fishing pole mount and the attachment of the transducer, along with details on battery usage and charging.

Function Description

The Garmin LiveScope™ Ice Fishing Bundle is designed to enhance ice fishing experiences by providing real-time sonar views of underwater environments. The core function of this bundle is to allow users to see fish and underwater structures in vivid detail, both in front of and below their fishing location. This is achieved through a transducer that emits sonar signals and processes the returning echoes to create a live, moving image on a compatible Garmin chartplotter or fishfinder. The system is specifically adapted for ice fishing, featuring a portable pole mount that allows for easy deployment through an ice hole and precise aiming of the transducer. The bundle includes a sealed, lead-acid battery to power the system, ensuring portability and extended use in remote ice fishing locations. The LiveScope technology offers two primary viewing modes: LiveVü Forward, which provides a wide forward-looking view, and LiveVü Down, which offers a detailed view directly beneath the transducer. These modes enable anglers to locate fish, observe their reactions to bait, and understand the underwater topography, significantly improving the chances of a successful catch. The system is designed for ease of use and quick setup, making it suitable for both novice and experienced ice anglers.

Usage Features

The Garmin LiveScope™ Ice Fishing Bundle offers several features designed for practical and effective use during ice fishing.

  • Portable Pole Mount Assembly: The bundle includes a robust pole mount that is assembled using a Phillips screwdriver and a 5 mm hex wrench. The mount features sheet metal screws on the base to stabilize it on the ice, preventing movement during use. The pole itself is modular, consisting of a handle, a top pole segment, and three middle pole segments. This modular design allows users to adjust the pole's length based on the thickness of the ice, ensuring the transducer is positioned optimally below the ice for best performance. The shortest segment is recommended for the bottom of the pole.
  • Transducer Attachment and Aiming: The LVS32 transducer is securely attached to a bracket on the pole using an included hex wrench, shoulder screw, flat washer, and rubber washer. It is crucial to fully tighten the shoulder screw to a recommended torque of 2.5 lb-ft (3.4 N-m) to ensure the transducer remains stable. Once attached, the transducer cable is secured to the pole using hook and loop straps, keeping it tidy and preventing entanglement. A key feature is the ability to position and aim the transducer for the desired view. The handle allows for easy rotation of the transducer. Furthermore, the transducer can be oriented from a forward-looking view to a down-looking view with a simple "one click" adjustment, providing flexibility to switch between LiveVü Forward and LiveVü Down modes as needed.
  • Ice Hole Placement: The mount base is designed to be placed around the hole in the ice, providing a stable platform for the entire system. This ensures that the transducer can be easily deployed and retrieved, and that the pole remains upright during fishing.
  • Effective Range Performance: The system's effective forward and down range performance is influenced by water and bottom conditions. In LiveVü Forward mode, the transducer can provide an effective forward range of five to eight times the water depth. For example, in 3 m (10 ft.) of water, the effective forward range can be between 15 and 24 m (50 and 80 ft.). In LiveVü Down mode, the fore/aft range is approximately equal to the water depth. For instance, in 10 m (33 ft.) water depth, the screen will display 5 m (16 ft.) fore and 5 m (16 ft.) aft of the transducer. Deeper water generally provides a greater fore and aft range. Users are advised to observe water depth and range, especially when operating in manual range or depth mode, to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Battery-Powered Portability: The bundle is powered by a user-replaceable, sealed, lead-acid battery, making it highly portable for ice fishing. The battery life can vary based on factors such as device backlight brightness, temperature, and the age of the battery. To extend battery life, users can lower the backlight brightness level of their connected chartplotter or fishfinder.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance of the Garmin LiveScope™ Ice Fishing Bundle, particularly its battery, is crucial for ensuring longevity and optimal performance.

  • Battery Charging: The bundle includes an all-in-one cable and a wall charger for battery maintenance. To charge the battery, users must first remove the battery terminal covers. Then, the red and black spade connectors from the all-in-one cable are connected to the corresponding battery terminals. The all-in-one cable is then connected to the wall charger, which is subsequently plugged into a wall outlet. The wall charger features an indicator light that is solid orange when the battery is charging and turns solid green when the battery is fully charged. A fully discharged battery typically takes about 10 to 12 hours to fully charge in a room-temperature environment. It is emphasized that only the included charger should be used, and the battery should not be charged in an unventilated or gas-tight area.
  • Battery Storage: For extended storage, the battery should be kept in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, within a temperature range of 5° F to 104° F (from -15° C to 40° C). Sealed, lead-acid batteries slowly lose their charge during storage, so it is recommended to charge the battery prior to use for best results. Frequent recharging, rather than allowing complete discharge, can extend the battery's life expectancy.
  • Temperature Considerations: The battery's operating temperature range is from 5° F to 122° F (from -15° C to 50° C). When used in cold temperatures, sealed, lead-acid batteries do not hold their charge as long as in warmer temperatures. The battery charging temperature range is from 5° F to 104° F (from -15° C to 40° C). It is important not to leave the device exposed to heat sources or in high-temperature locations, such as in the sun in an unattended vehicle, to prevent damage.
  • Cleaning and Disposal: Users should not use organic solvents or other cleaners on the battery, other than recommended chemical cleaners. In case of contact with internal acid from an open battery, flush with water immediately. For disposal, users should contact their local waste disposal department to ensure the battery is disposed of in accordance with applicable local laws and regulations, as sealed, lead-acid batteries are recyclable.
  • General Battery Safety: Several warnings are provided to ensure safe handling of the battery. These include not placing the battery near objects that may cause sparks, flames, or heat, not incinerating, disassembling, puncturing, or damaging the battery. Users should avoid swallowing, touching, or inhaling the contents of an open battery, and prevent contact with internal acid. The battery should not be submerged in water, shorted at the terminals, dropped, or thrown. It is also important to keep the battery away from children and to only replace it with the correct replacement battery to avoid risks of fire or explosion.
