Problem Possible Reason The Solution
The water system must
be purged.
This can happen after an elongates period of storage
and when using the appliance only rarely. Clean the
appliance (see: ‘Care and Cleaning’), especially purging
the water system thoroughly (see: ‘Purging the Water
System’).
No or not enough crema. The coffee beans are
stale.
Use freshly roasted coffee beans with a 'Roasted On'
date and consume 3 weeks after that date, at the
latest (see: ‘Selection and Storage of Coffee’).
The coffee powder has
been tamped too tightly.
Reduce the pressure, applied for tamping the coffee
powder in the filter basket.
The coffee powder is too
coarse.
Select a finer grind size. When purchasing pre-ground
coffee, ensure that it is suited for espresso machines.
The pores of the filter
basket are clogged.
Clean the filter basket (see: ‘Cleaning the Portafilter
and Filter Basket’).
Espresso runs out around
the edge of the porta-
filter.
The portafilter is not
inserted correctly in the
group head.
Ensure that the portafilter is rotated to the right until
the handle is in the LOCK TIGHT position, indicated on
the group head. Rotating past the LOCK TIGHT position
will not damage the silicone seal (see: ‘Inserting the
Portafilter’).
Coffee powder has been
around the filter basket
rim.
After filling thoroughly wipe excess coffee powder from
the rim of the filter basket to ensure a proper seal in
the group head.
The filter basket rim
or the portafilter rim
has been wet. Wet sur-
faces reduce the friction
required to hold the por-
tafilter in place while it is
under pressure.
Always ensure that filter basket and portafilter are dried
thoroughly before filling with coffee powder and inser-
ting into the group head.
The appliance is opera-
ting with unusual noises.
The water tank is empty
or not installed correctly.
Fill the water tank and ensure to insert the water tank
correctly (see: ‘First Use’).
You are using the steam
function.
During steam generation, the appliance will make pul-
sing noises. This is normal.
