Overview

This document outlines the operation, installation, and maintenance of a GE Appliances top-loading washing machine. It covers various models, including GTW540, GTW525, GTW500, GTW490, GTW485, GTW480, GTW465, GTW460, GTW340, GTW335, GTW330, GTW220, HTW240, and HTW200.

Function Description

The washing machine is designed to efficiently clean various types of laundry using a combination of water, detergent, and agitation. It features multiple wash cycles and options to cater to different fabric types, soil levels, and user preferences. The machine utilizes an automatic load sensing system to determine the appropriate water level and agitation profile for each load, optimizing cleaning performance while conserving water.

Usage Features

Controls: The washer features a control panel with knobs and buttons for selecting cycles and options. These include:

  • Soil Level: Allows adjustment for light, normal, or heavy soil.
  • Temperature: Offers various water temperature settings such as Tap Cold, Cold, Cool, Warm, and Hot. Some models also include "All Cold Rinses" or "Sanitize Cycle - Hot" options.
  • Deep Fill: An option to add incremental water to the wash load. Holding the button for 3 seconds provides the deepest fill level. This is recommended for special case loads only.
  • Cycle Selector Knob: Used to choose from a variety of wash cycles like Colors, Whites, Towels/Sheets, Casuals, Bulky Items, Delicates, DeepClean, Drain & Spin, Active Wear, Jeans, and Speed Wash. Turning the knob after starting a cycle will stop the washer and allow for a new selection.
  • Options: Additional settings such as 2nd Rinse, Extra Spin, 2nd Rinse + Extra Spin, Deep Rinse/Extra Rinse, and Auto Soak.
  • Stain PreTreat: This feature allows users to select the type of stain (Dirt, Tomato, Grass, Wine) on garments. The washer then performs an initial water fill at a tailored temperature, followed by a scrubbing period and active soak, before proceeding with the selected wash cycle.
  • Start/Pause Button: Initiates or pauses the wash cycle. Holding for 3 seconds stops the cycle.
  • Lid Lock Indicator: Illuminates when the lid is locked during operation.

Wash Cycles:

  • Colors: For normal, regular, or typical use of cotton clothing up to a full load. Offers various wash temperatures and soil levels.
  • Dark Colors: Designed for dark colored items, linens, and mixed loads, using lower wash temperatures and shorter wash periods to minimize fading.
  • Casuals: Tailored for casual clothes and lightly soiled office wear.
  • Delicates: Utilizes a gentle agitate profile and low spin speed for lingerie and special care fabrics. Mesh bags are recommended for small or ultra-delicate items.
  • Cold Wash: Combines extended wash agitation periods with soak periods for enhanced cleaning and energy efficiency with colder water.
  • Active Wear: For medium to lightly soiled athletic wear and technical fabrics, incorporating a multi-stage wash period with soak to treat body soils and odors.
  • Speed Wash: For small, lightly soiled loads that need to be cleaned quickly, using an expedited wash period and continuous spray rinse.
  • Whites: For whites and household linens, providing the hottest temperature and longer wash periods for brightening. Bleach or Oxi products are recommended.
  • Towels/Sheets: Uses a higher water level and soak period for effective cleaning of towels and sheets.
  • Deep Clean: For sturdy fabrics with heavy soil, incorporating multi-step wash and soak periods with extended wash periods.
  • Bulky Items: Specifically for water-resistant, bedding, and bulky items like large coats and mattress pads. Provides a deep fill/max fill water level and a low spin speed. Crucially, only this cycle (or Delicates on some models) should be used for waterproof, water-resistant, or bulky items to prevent excessive vibration and potential damage.
  • Drain & Spin: Utilizes a high-speed spin to extract water from wet items.

Detergent and Additives:

  • High Efficiency (HE) Detergents: Recommended for optimal performance with the washer's low water wash and rinse systems.
  • Liquid Fabric Softener Dispenser: Located in the agitator cap, it automatically releases diluted liquid fabric softener at the proper time. Direct pouring onto clothes is discouraged to prevent staining.
  • Liquid Bleach Dispenser: Located in the front left corner, for adding liquid chlorine bleach.
  • Pretreatment: Oxi products or other laundry pretreatments should be placed directly in the bottom of the wash basket before loading clothes. Liquid chlorine bleach and laundry pretreatments should not be used in the same wash load.

Automatic Load Sensing: The washer initiates a spin at the beginning of the cycle to sense the load size, which can take up to 3 minutes. This system uses less water than traditional washers while maintaining effective cleaning.

Start-Up Sequence: The washer turns on the cold water valve for two short periods, followed by a 10-second pause. Opening the lid during this period will pause the washer, requiring a press of the Start button to resume.

Automatic Drain Sequence: The machine will automatically drain if the lid is left open for more than 15 minutes with water present, or if left in a paused state with the lid closed for more than 24 hours with water present.

Consumer Help Indicator (CHI): Provides visual cues through blinking lights to indicate certain conditions:

  • Spin light blinking: Indicates an out-of-balance condition. The washer attempts to correct this, but if the load remains too wet, redistribution and a Drain & Spin cycle may be needed.
  • Fill light blinking: Indicates a water supply issue (e.g., forgotten to turn on faucets). A 4-minute lock-out period will initiate, after which the cycle can be restarted.
  • Lid Locked light blinking: Occurs if 3 cycles have been started without opening the lid. The lid must be opened to reset and start a new cycle.

Maintenance Features

Exterior Cleaning: Wipe off spills immediately with a damp cloth.

Interior Cleaning: Leave the lid open after washing to allow moisture to evaporate. For basket cleaning, use a clean soft cloth dampened with liquid detergent, then rinse. Avoid harsh or gritty cleaners.

Fabric Softener Dispenser Cleaning:

  1. Remove the dispenser from the agitator.
  2. Separate the dispenser cup from the cover by pushing down on the inside of the cup.
  3. Soak both parts in a solution of 1 US gallon (3.8 liters) warm water, 1/4 cup (60 ml) heavy-duty liquid detergent, and 1 cup (240 ml) bleach.
  4. Loosen buildup with a clean, soft cloth if necessary. Avoid stiff brushes.
  5. Rinse and reassemble, then place back on the agitator.

Water Supply Hoses: Hoses connecting the washer to the faucet should be replaced every 5 years to reduce the risk of failures and water damage.

Moving and Storage: If moving or storing the washer where it will be exposed to freezing temperatures, it is recommended to have a service technician remove water from the drain pump and hoses.

Long Vacations: Turn off water faucets and drain all water from hoses and the water filter pump area if temperatures will be below freezing.

Installation Requirements:

  • Location: Must be installed on a hard, level surface (maximum slope of 1/2" per foot) and not in areas exposed to freezing temperatures, dripping water, or curtains/drapes.
  • Clearances: Minimum clearances for alcove or closet installations are 0" on either side, 2" front, 3" rear, and 60" vertical space. Closet doors must be louvered or ventilated with at least 60 square inches of open area (120 square inches if both washer and dryer are in the closet).
  • Water Supply: Hot and cold water supply lines must be purged for 30 seconds before installation. Water pressure must be between 20 psi and 120 psi. The household water heater should be set to deliver water at 120° to 150°F (50° to 66°C) for hot washes. Both hot and cold shutoff valves are required.
  • Drain: Water should be drained into a standpipe, with a discharge height between 30 inches and 8 feet above the washer's base. The standpipe must have a minimum inside diameter of 1-1/2 inches and be open to atmosphere.
  • Grounding: The washer must be properly grounded according to all governing codes and ordinances. It requires plugging into a grounded 3-prong outlet; adapters or extension cords should not be used.

WiFi Connect (on some models): The washer may be compatible with GE Appliances WiFi Connect using an optional ConnectPlus module. This allows for remote monitoring, control, and notifications via a smartphone. Support for connectivity issues is available through GE Appliances Connected Home Support.
