Shaft Assembly/Brake Overview
The shaft assembly consists of the shaft, tub seal
and a brake system.
The shaft assembly operates in two modes, spin
and agitation. The shaft transfers power to the
wash system, pulsator and basket. Motor power is
transmitted to the pulsator shaft from the belt to the
shaft assembly pulley. The shaft pulley is attached
to the bottom end of the pulsator shaft and the
pulsator is attached to the top. The wash basket is
attached to the shaft under the pulsator with the
hub nut.
Drain/Mode Shifter Operation
The Drain/Mode Shift motor will operate during both
spin or agitate.
During agitate, the linkage and brake lever are
pulled toward the motor approximately 1/2
the length of the linkage. This will release the
brake, allowing the basket to move freely and
independently from the pulsator.
During spin, the linkage and brake lever are pulled
toward the motor approximately the complete
length of the linkage. This will release the brake,
allowing the basket and pulsator to move freely
together. When in spin, the basket will rotate
clockwise.
If the lid is lifted or if the washer is powered down,
power to the drain/mode shift motor will be
interrupted. The retractor spring will pull the linkage
away from the motor, which applies the brake in the
shaft assembly.
Drain/Mode Shift Motor Removal
NOTE: To access the drain/mode shift motor, the
washer can be carefully placed on its side. To
prevent damage to the washer, place a towel or

1. Disconnect the retraction spring connecting to
the motor linkage.
2. Disconnect the harness plug connector to the
drain/mode shift motor.
3. Remove the three dual head (8 mm/Phillips)
bolts that secure the mode shift /brake motor to
the mounting platform.
