Overview

This document is an owner's manual for a Centurion portable generator, model 006104-1, manufactured by Generac Power Systems, Inc. It provides comprehensive information on the generator's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The Centurion portable generator is a compact, high-performance, air-cooled, engine-driven generator designed to supply electrical power for operating electrical loads where utility power is unavailable or during power outages. It is explicitly stated that the generator is NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN CRITICAL LIFE SUPPORT APPLICATIONS. The generator is equipped with a 2-year limited warranty.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Rated Power: 3.25 kW
  • Surge Power: 3.75 kW
  • Rated AC Voltage: 120/240 V
  • Rated Current: 27/13.5 Amps
  • Rated Frequency: 60 Hz @ 3600 RPM
  • Phase: Single Phase
  • Assembled Dimensions (L x W x H): 622mm (24.5 in) x 564mm (22.2 in) x 534mm (21.0 in)
  • Unit Weight: 50kg (110 lbs)
  • Engine Displacement: 208 cc
  • Spark Plug Type: F6TC, NGK BP6IS or Champion RN11YC
  • Spark Plug Gap: 0.030 inch (0.76 mm)
  • Gasoline Capacity: 12.7 L (3.35 U.S. gallons)
  • Oil Capacity: 0.6 L (0.634 Qts.)
  • Run Time: 10.2 Hours at 1/2 Load
  • Emission Certified: Class II (engine manufacturer warrants emission control system for two years).
  • Maximum wattage is subject to factors like fuel Btu content, ambient temperature, altitude, and engine condition. Power decreases by approximately 3.5% for every 1,000 feet above sea level and 1% for every 6°C (10°F) above 16°C (60°F).

Usage Features:

The generator features a control panel with:

  • 120 Volt AC, 20 Amp, Duplex Receptacle: For 120V AC, 20 Amp, single-phase, 60 Hz electrical loads.
  • 120/240V AC, 20 Amp Locking Receptacle: For 120V and/or 240V AC, 20 Amp, single-phase, 60 Hz electrical loads.
  • Circuit Breakers (AC): A 2-pole, 14 amp circuit breaker protects against electrical overload.
  • On/OFF Switch: Controls generator operation.
  • Choke Knob: Used for starting a cold engine.
  • Fuel Shut Off Valve: Between the fuel tank and carburetor.
  • Recoil Starter: For manual engine starting.
  • Grounding Lug: For connecting the generator to an approved earth ground.
  • Low Oil Level Shutdown System: Automatically shuts down the engine if oil level drops below a specified level.
  • Roll Over Valve: Passes fuel vapors to the air box.
  • Recovery Hose: Installed between the engine air intake and the Roll Over Valve.
  • Handle: Pivots and retracts for storage, enhancing portability.
  • Wheels: Designed to improve portability, but not for over-the-road use.

Safety Warnings for Usage:

  • DEADLY EXHAUST FUMES! ONLY use OUTSIDE and far away from windows, doors, and vents. Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless poison that can cause unconsciousness or death.
  • NEVER operate indoors, in a vehicle, or in partly enclosed areas, even if doors and windows are open.
  • Ensure adequate, unobstructed cooling and ventilating air flow.
  • Maintain the exhaust system properly to prevent unsafe operation or non-compliance with codes.
  • Always use a battery-operated carbon monoxide alarm indoors.
  • ELECTRICAL HAZARDS: Produces dangerously high voltage. Avoid contact with bare wires, terminals, etc. Ensure proper grounding as per NEC and local codes. Use a ground fault circuit interrupter in damp or highly conductive areas. Do not use worn or damaged cord sets. Disconnect the engine starting battery before maintenance.
  • FIRE HAZARDS: Gasoline is highly FLAMMABLE and its vapors are EXPLOSIVE. Do not smoke, use open flames, sparks, or heat near gasoline. Never add fuel while the unit is running or hot. Allow the engine to cool completely before refueling. Do not overfill the fuel tank; allow room for expansion. Never store the generator with fuel in the tank where gasoline vapors might reach an open flame, spark, or pilot light. Wipe up fuel/oil spills immediately. Keep combustible materials away and maintain a 5-foot clearance for ventilation.
  • Do not overload the generator or individual receptacles.
  • Do not connect 240 Volt loads to 120 Volt receptacles, 3-phase loads, or 50 Hz loads.
  • Start the engine and let it stabilize before connecting electrical loads. Disconnect all electrical loads before shutting down.

Maintenance Features:

The manual provides a detailed maintenance schedule:

  • Check Oil Level: At each use.
  • Change Oil: After the first 20 hours of operation, then every 50 hours thereafter. More frequent changes are needed under heavy load, high temperatures, or dirty/dusty conditions.
  • Check Valve Clearance: After the first 50 hours of operation, then every 100 hours thereafter. Intake: 0.10 ± 0.02mm (cold); Exhaust: 0.15 ± 0.02mm (cold).
  • Service Air Filter: Every 25 hours. Clean or replace more often in dusty conditions.
  • Replace Spark Plug: Every 100 hours (or annually).
  • Inspect and Clean Spark Arrestor: At least once a year, more often if used regularly.
  • General Maintenance: Keep the unit clean and dry. Operate and store in a clean, dry environment, free from excessive dust, dirt, moisture, or corrosive vapors. Cooling air slots must be kept clean and unobstructed. Do not use a garden hose to clean the generator.
  • Long Term Storage: For storage longer than 30 days, add a quality gasoline stabilizer and run the unit for 10-15 minutes. After the engine cools, remove all gasoline from the fuel tank using a non-conductive vacuum siphon. Run the engine until it stops from lack of fuel. Drain engine oil and refill with recommended grade. Pour 1/2 ounce (15 ml) of engine oil into the cylinder, cover the spark plug hole, and pull the recoil starter a couple of times to lubricate piston rings and cylinder bore. Install and tighten the spark plug (do not connect the wire). Store the unit in a clean, dry place.
  • Oil Type: All oil should meet minimum American Petroleum Institute (API) Service Class SJ, SL or better. Use SAE 30 above 40°F, 10W-30 below 40°F and down to 10°F, or synthetic 5W-30 for all temperatures.

The manual also includes a troubleshooting guide for common issues like no AC output, engine bogging down, failure to start, engine shutdown, lack of power, and engine faltering.
