Overview

The provided document is an installation and maintenance manual for the Genie GCL-LJ Light Duty Jackshaft Operator. This device is a commercial garage door opener designed for sectional doors.

Function Description

The GCL-LJ Light Duty Jackshaft Operator is an electric motor-driven system designed to automate the opening and closing of commercial sectional doors. It is specifically designed for direct coupling onto torsion shafts, or optionally via a chain couple kit. The operator facilitates controlled movement of the door, offering features for safety, convenience, and customization of operation. It integrates with various accessories such as remote controls, wall consoles, keypads, and safety devices to provide a comprehensive door automation solution. The system is equipped with an internal thermal protector to prevent motor overheating and includes a manual release mechanism for operation during power failures.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Door Type Compatibility: Sectional doors, including Standard Lift, Hi-Lift (up to 84 inches maximum high lift), and Vertical Lift doors.
  • Door Height Compatibility: Up to 14 feet high.
  • Torsion Bar Compatibility: Only doors using torsion springs with a 1-inch diameter solid or hollow 14 or 16 gauge tubular steel torsion bar.
  • Door Size/Weight Capacity: Up to 180 square feet, 850 lbs. balance weight, and 14 feet high.
  • Power Input: 115 VAC plug provided with the operator. Optional Power Extension Kit (P/N: 41194R.S) for extended low voltage wiring, or permanent wiring by a trained electrician.
  • Mounting: Designed for direct coupling onto torsion shafts (1" diameter, with or without keyway). Requires a torsion bar shaft protrusion of at least 2-1/4" from the bearing plate. Torsion bar centerline to wall distance must be between 2-1/2" and 6". Torsion bar centerline to ceiling clearance must be at least 2-1/4". End of torsion shaft to side wall clearance must be at least 7".
  • Safety Devices (UL Approved Reversing Devices):
    • Standard Commercial Photocells with Extendable Brackets (38176R.S)
    • Protected Commercial Photocells with Extendable Brackets (OPAKPE2.S)
    • NEMA 4X Photocells (OPAKPEN4GX.S)
    • Retro Reflective N4X Photocells (OPGAKRPEN4X.S)
    • Monitored Light Curtains (3ft: OPAKMLC3.S, 6ft: OPAKMLC6.S) (Powered with Transformer 36238A)
    • DC/T3 Monitored Edge Interface Adapter (OPAKMEIGX.S)
    • Wireless Edge Kit (OPAKGMMWE2.S) (Powered with Transformer 36238A)
  • Control System: Features a control board with terminals for various accessories (BBU, LOCK, STB, BWC, INTER-LOCK, OPEN, CLOSE, STOP, GND).
  • LED Indicators: Long LED and Round LED for programming feedback and troubleshooting. Wi-Fi LED for Aladdin Connect® status.
  • Programming Time Limits: Each programming step has a 30-second time limit (60 seconds for remote controls, keypads, wall controls, and Bluetooth control programming).
  • Operating Speed: Adjustable based on drum selection (Standard 4 inch or less diameter drum, Standard or High Lift greater than 4 inch diameter or Vertical Lift).
  • Thermal Protection: Internal thermal protector for the motor, which automatically resets after cooling.
  • Manual Release: Cable-operated manual release for disengaging the operator drive system during power failure.

Usage Features

  • Drum Selection Adjustment: Allows adjustment of operator speed settings for different drum types (standard lift, high lift, vertical lift) and diameters (4" or less, greater than 4"). This ensures proper force profile and door operation.
  • Limit Setting: Programmable UP and DOWN travel limits to define the door's fully open and closed positions. These limits are crucial for safe and proper operation.
  • Force Control: Pre-programmed force settings (factory default level 6) to prevent damage and ensure safety. Adjustable for specific conditions like stiff weather seals or binding doors.
  • Contact Reverse Test: A mandatory monthly safety test to ensure the door reverses direction within 2 seconds upon contact with an obstruction (e.g., a 2" x 4" board).
  • Remote Control Programming: Supports programming of multiple remote control transmitters for open/close/stop operation.
  • Mid-Stop Programming (Optional): Allows setting an intermediate stop position for the door between the open and close limits.
  • Limit Overrun Programming (Optional): Feature to reduce service calls caused by small objects reversing the door at the down limit when using a monitored safety edge. Default is DISABLED.
  • Time-to-Close (TTC) Programming (Optional): Automatically closes the door after a specified time (15s, 30s, 1min, 1min 30s, 2min, 3min, 4min, 5min) when the door is at the mid-stop or open limit. Requires a monitored safety device.
  • Aladdin Connect® (Optional Kit): Mobile device app integration for remote operation, user customization, notifications, usage history, and smart home platform connectivity. Requires a strong Wi-Fi signal.
  • Wireless Keypad (Optional): Allows operation using a programmable Personal Identification Number (PIN).
  • Vehicle Controls (HomeLink® / Car2U®) Programming (Optional): Integration with in-vehicle remote control systems.
  • Door Lock (Optional): An electrically controlled lock that prevents manual door operation, enhancing security.
  • LED Light Fixture (Optional): Bluetooth®-enabled light fixture that pairs with the operator and provides illumination.
  • Wall Consoles (Optional):
    • Wireless Wall Console: Provides basic open/close/stop functionality and light control.
    • Basic Wall Console (Hardwired): Offers main activation, Sure-Loc™ (vacation lock), and light override functionality.
