With the Kayenne switcher, Grass
Valley is introducing a Device Control
Module (DCM) that supports full-motion
control (including jog wheel) for up to
32 devices such as DDRs/VTRs. Another
new introduction is Q-MEM, a library
of device cues independent of E-MEM,
which operate in conjunction with the
DCM and the up to six Device Control
Windows on the system bar.
The new Kayenne menu system also
leads the industry with a simplified
navigation so that no menu is more
than two levels down. Each menu is
assisted by favorites, history, and semi-
transparent pull-down quick-links.
Panel Control Units
The Kayenne switcher’s control panels
run silently with no fan noise as their
CPUs are located remotely in a 3 RU
panel control unit (PCU).
Each PCU supports one or two control
surfaces, either in the same or different
logical suites. A control surface typically
consists of M/E stripes, a local aux
stripe, plus a touchscreen menu panel
with five knobs. This may be augmented
with satellite panels consisting of one or
two modules. Each PCU has eight ports
that connect to panel stripes or satellite
panels. The PCU can be mounted up to
15 meters from the main panel.
Powerful Video Processing
The first production switcher to have six
keyers in every M/E, Kayenne is also the
first production switcher to include an
extra half-M/E in every model, providing
cut/mix transitions and six linear/
luminance keys. This half-M/E can be
used as PGM/PST or as any other logical
M/E. Each full M/E can have up to four
channels of iDPM.
FlexiKey, DoubleTake, and split layered
modes are included as standard for all
M/Es (including the half-M/E). Control
is enhanced on the panel by dedicated
primary and secondary partition buttons
and the use of a split lever arm on
transition modules.
An optional eDPM for 8 RU frames
provides an additional four video/key
channels of eDPM with primary and
secondary combiner outputs. The eDPM
acts as an HD Kaleidoscope/DVEous
replacement with its own independent
E-MEMs.
The Kayenne Video Production Center
supports input conversion (MatchDef)
and output conversion (SetDef). These
converters are not simple scalars but do
full up/down/cross conversion with color
space conversion and motion adaptation.
Using MatchDef, converted inputs are
available on all busses, including aux
busses. SetDef does not consume any
M/E resources—so, for example, when
making a 1080i production, it is easy to
also provide 720p and SD outputs.
