This document is an operator manual for the Greenworks STP302 String Trimmer, a cordless, battery-powered tool designed for cutting grass and light weeds.
Function Description:
The Greenworks STP302 String Trimmer is intended for cutting grass, light weeds, and similar vegetation at or around ground level, with the cutting plane approximately parallel to the ground surface. It is not designed for cutting or chopping hedges, shrubs, bushes, flowers, or compost. The machine operates using a string head assembly that rotates to cut vegetation. It features an edge guide to limit the cutting range and reduce the risk of damage from the rotating line, and a guard to protect the user from debris. The trimmer is equipped with a line cut-off blade on the guard, which continuously trims the line to ensure a consistent and efficient cut diameter.

Usage Features:
The string trimmer is designed for ease of use and safety. It features a rear handle, lock-out lever, trigger, auxiliary handle, upper shaft, coupler, lower shaft, edge guide, trimmer head, and guard.
- Assembly: The machine requires assembly of the edge guide, guard, and shaft. The auxiliary handle can be attached and adjusted to a comfortable position.
- Battery System: It uses a removable Lithium-Ion battery pack (BAF701/BAF702 series) which is installed by aligning ribs with grooves and pushing until it locks. Removal is done by pushing the release button.
- Starting and Stopping: To start, push the lock-out button and pull the trigger. To stop, release the trigger.
- Cutting Line Adjustment: The cutting line length can be adjusted by bumping the trimmer head against the ground during operation. The line is automatically released, and the cut-off blade trims excess length.
- Cutting Diameter Adjustment: The cutting diameter is factory-set at 13 inches (330 mm) but can be adjusted to 15 inches (381 mm) for a larger cutting area. This involves removing the battery pack, turning the cut-off blade 180°, and re-tightening the screws.
- Operation Tips: Users are advised to keep a firm two-handed grip, cut tall grass from top down, and tilt the machine towards the area to be cut, using the tip of the cutting line. Moving the machine from right to left helps prevent thrown debris from reaching the operator. It's important not to force the trimmer head into uncut grass and to avoid cutting near wire, picket fences, stone, brick walls, curbs, and wood, as these can cause line wear and breakage.
- Safety Features: The machine incorporates a lock-out lever to prevent unintentional starting. The guard is essential for safe operation and must be in place. Users are instructed to wear safety glasses with side shields (ANSI Z87.1 compliant) and a face mask in dusty conditions. Loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair should be secured. Bystanders, children, and pets must be kept at least 50 feet away.
Maintenance Features:
Regular maintenance is crucial for the performance and longevity of the string trimmer.
- General Maintenance: All nuts, bolts, and screws should be checked regularly for tightness. Only identical manufacturer's replacement parts and accessories should be used. Maintenance not covered in the manual should be performed by an authorized service center.
- Cleaning: After use, the machine should be cleaned with a moist cloth and neutral detergent. Aggressive detergents or solvents should be avoided for plastic parts. The trimmer head, air vents, and motor should be kept free of grass, leaves, and grease to prevent overheating. Water should not be sprayed onto the motor or electrical components.
- Spool Replacement: To replace the spool, push the tabs on the trimmer head, remove the spool cover, and then remove the old spool. A new spool should be inserted with the cutting line in the slot and extended approximately 6 inches (15 cm). The cutting line ends are then threaded through holes in the trimmer head, and the spool cover is reinstalled until it clicks.
- Cutting Line Installation: When installing new cutting line, no more than 13 feet should be used at a time. The remaining line on the old spool should be removed, slots on the spool cap aligned with the trimmer head, and the new line threaded through the holes until it exits the opposite side, ensuring equal length on both sides. The spool cap is then turned counterclockwise to wind the line, leaving approximately 5 inches on each side.
- Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as the machine not starting (checking battery contact, charge, and proper trigger/lock-out button engagement), line breaking (incorrect usage, dull cut-off blade), grass winding around the head (cutting too much at once), and the motor overheating (overload, hot battery).
- Battery Care: Batteries should be stored indoors in a dry, high, or locked-up place, out of reach of children. Damaged battery packs should not be recharged or used and must be discarded properly according to local regulations, covering terminals with heavy-duty adhesive tape. Batteries should not be incinerated or disposed of in regular household trash. They should be taken to a certified recycling or disposal center.
- Storage: Before transportation or storage, the battery pack must be removed. The machine should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from corrosive agents. It should be secured during transport to prevent damage.
