When going astern, please make sure you are holding the wheel or tiller firmly with your hands! The
rudder will give a huge kick to the wheel/tiller when going astern and if you do not hold the wheel or
tiller well, damages will occur to the steering system.
Wheel steering
The wires will stretch and settle during the first time after a heavy load. If necessary, (by observed play
at the wheel) adjust the tension at the quadrant. The wires should not be loose but not too tight. Metal
dust at the turning sheaves indicate abnormal wear. Grease the wires once a year. On the HR 40 and
HR 43 the lower rudder bearing should be greased once annually with waterproof grease, pumped into
the opening that suits a grease pump.
