Overview

The Hantek CC-650 AC/DC Current Probe is a versatile tool designed for measuring both DC and AC currents up to 650A and 500A respectively, with a measurement frequency up to 5KHz. This probe allows for non-invasive current measurement, eliminating the need to break the current loop or strip insulation from conductors. Its design, featuring an extended jaw, makes it suitable for measurements in confined spaces.

Function Description

The CC-650 current probe enables multimeters and oscilloscopes to directly measure current. When connected to a multimeter, the BNC/banana-KJJ adapter is used, with the GND terminal inserted into the COM terminal and the other terminal into the V-Ω terminal. It's crucial that the multimeter's input impedance is at least 10K ohms. For oscilloscope connections, the probe's BNC plug connects directly to the oscilloscope's BNC terminal.

The probe offers two measurement ranges: 10mV/A and 1mV/A, selected via a slider switch. A green power indicator lights up when the probe is powered normally. For currents not exceeding 20 amperes, the 10mV/A range is recommended, paired with the AC 200mV or DC 200mV range on the multimeter.

A critical feature for DC current measurement is the zero adjustment knob. Before measuring, especially DC current, the user must rotate this knob until the multimeter reading is close to zero or, when using an oscilloscope, until the glow line returns to the reference position. This step is essential to compensate for the hysteresis effect that can prevent the probe from reaching the correct zero point. To eliminate hysteresis, the jaws of the current probe should be opened and closed several times before adjusting the zero.

The probe's output is interpreted differently depending on the selected range:

  • 10mV/A range: The measured voltage (in mV) from the multimeter or oscilloscope is multiplied by 100 to obtain the actual current value in mA. For example, a 10mV reading corresponds to 1000mA (1A).
  • 1mV/A range: The measured voltage (in mV) is multiplied by 1000 to obtain the actual current value in mA. For example, a 5mV reading corresponds to 5000mA (5A).

When measuring AC current with an oscilloscope, the oscilloscope's measurement functions can be used to determine the peak-to-peak and effective values. The magnitude of alternating current is typically expressed by its effective value. It is recommended to set the oscilloscope's acquisition mode to "average" for AC current measurements.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Measurable Conductor Diameter: Up to 30 mm
  • Effective Measuring Range:
    • 10mV/A: 1A to 40A (DC or rms AC)
    • 1mV/A: 1A to 500A (rms AC), 1A to 650A (DC)
  • Accuracy of Current Probe (at 23±5℃, 70%R.H. maximum):
    • DC Current:
      • 10mV/A: ±(1.5% + 0.5A) for 1A ~ 40A
      • 1mV/A: ±(1.5% + 0.5A) for 1A ~ 650A
    • AC Current (0Hz to 500Hz):
      • 10mV/A: ±(2% + 0.5A) for 1A ~ 40A
    • AC Current (0Hz to 5KHz):
      • 1mV/A: ±(2% + 0.5A) for 1A ~ 500A
  • System Accuracy: The combined accuracy of the current probe and the connected digital multimeter or oscilloscope. For instance, if the probe is set to 10mV/A and measures 1A (output 10mV) with 1.5% accuracy, the output can range from 9.85mV to 10.15mV. If a multimeter with 0.5% accuracy in the 200mV range is connected, the displayed value could range from 9.80mV to 10.20mV.
  • Load Resistance: 10KΩ typical
  • Temperature Coefficient: 0.1 × (specified accuracy) temperature coefficient (for 0℃ to 18℃ and 28℃ to 50℃)
  • Working Temperature: 0℃ to 50℃, 70%R.H.
  • Storage Temperature: -20℃ to +70℃, 80%R.H.
  • Battery Type: 9V DC, NEDA 1604, 6F22, 006P
  • Battery Life: 100 hours for typical alkaline batteries
  • Weight: 250 grams typical
  • Dimensions: 195 mm (length) × 70 mm (width) × 33 mm (height)
  • Output: BNC head cable
  • Optional Accessories: Adapter BNC/banana-KJJ

Usage Features

  • Non-Invasive Measurement: Measures current without breaking the circuit or stripping insulation, enhancing safety and convenience.
  • Wide Application: Suitable for detecting and monitoring potential leakage in circuits.
  • Extended Jaw Design: Allows for measurements in small gaps or hard-to-reach areas.
  • DC Current Polarity: When measuring DC current, the output is positive if the current flows from the positive terminal to the negative terminal of the current probe.
  • Zero Adjustment: Manual zero adjustment knob for accurate DC current measurements, compensating for hysteresis.
  • Low Battery Indicator: A red light illuminates to indicate a low battery, ensuring timely replacement and uninterrupted operation.
  • Compliance: Complies with Class II, Overvoltage CAT II, EN 61010-2-032, and EN 61010-1 standards. It also adheres to IEC 664 indoor application requirements (pollution level 2) and EU Directives 2014/30/EU (EMC) and 2014/35/EU (LVD).

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Replacement: The device uses a standard 9V DC battery (NEDA 1604, 6F22, 006P) with a typical life of 100 hours for alkaline batteries. The low battery indicator signals when replacement is needed.
  • Safety Guidelines:
    • The voltage of the conductor being measured must not exceed 300V DC or 240V rms AC.
    • It is strictly forbidden to measure bare conductors or conductors with cracked/frayed insulation to prevent harm to the user.
  • Environmental Considerations: The device is designed to operate within specific temperature and humidity ranges (0℃ to 50℃, 70%R.H. for operation; -20℃ to +70℃, 80%R.H. for storage). Adhering to these conditions helps maintain the device's accuracy and longevity.
  • Product Standards: The product's compliance with various safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards ensures its reliability and safe operation when used as instructed. Deviation from the instructions may lower the product's corresponding standard.
