For smooth and fast cutting, chain needs to
bemaintained properly. Thechain requires
sharpeningwhenthewoodchipsaresmalland
powdery,thechainmustbeforcedthroughthe
wood during cutting, or the chain cuts to one side.
During maintenance of your chain, consider the
following:
Improperfilingangleofthesideplatecanin-
creasetheriskofaseverekickback.
Raker(depthgauge)clearance.
Toolowincreasesthepotentialforkickback.
Notlowenoughdecreasescuttingability.
Ifcutterteethhavehithardobjectssuchasnails
andstones,orhavebeenabradedbymudor
sandonthewood,haveservicedealersharpen
chain.
NOTE: Inspectthe drive sprocketfor wear or
damagewhenreplacingthechain.Ifsignsofwear
ordamagearepresentintheareasindicated,have
thedrivesprocketreplacedbyanauthorizeddealer.
HOW TO SHARPEN THE CUTTERS
See Figures 36 - 37.
Becarefultofileallcutterstothespecifiedangles
and to the same length, as fast cutting can be
obtained only when all cutters are uniform.
WARNING:
Thesawchainisverysharp,alwayswearpro-
tectivegloveswhenperformingmaintenance
tothechaintopreventseriouspersonalinjury.
Properlytensionthechainpriortosharpening.
Refer to Chain Tension section earlier in this
manual.Doallofyourfilingatthemid-pointof
the bar.
Usea5/32in.diameterroundfileandholder.
Keepthefilelevelwiththetopplateofthetooth.
Donotletthefilediporrock.
Usinglightbutfirmpressure,stroketowards
the front corner of the tooth.
 Lift file away from the steel on each return
stroke.
Putafewfirmstrokesoneverytooth.Fileall
lefthandcuttersinonedirection.Thenmove
to the other side and file the right hand cutters
intheoppositedirection.
Removefilingsfromthefilewithawirebrush.
