For smooth and fast cutting, chain needs to
bemaintained properly. Thechain requires
sharpeningwhenthewoodchipsaresmalland
powdery,thechainmustbeforcedthroughthe
wood during cutting, or the chain cuts to one side.
During maintenance of your chain, consider the
following:
Improperfilingangleofthesideplatecanin-
creasetheriskofaseverekickback.
Raker(depthgauge)clearance.
Toolowincreasesthepotentialforkickback.
Notlowenoughdecreasescuttingability.
Ifcutterteethhavehithardobjectssuchasnails
andstones,orhavebeenabradedbymudor
sandonthewood,haveservicedealersharpen
chain.
NOTE: Inspectthe drive sprocketfor wear or
damagewhenreplacingthechain.Ifsignsofwear
ordamagearepresentintheareasindicated,have
thedrivesprocketreplacedbyanauthorizeddealer.
HOW TO SHARPEN THE CUTTERS
See Figures 36 - 37.
Becarefultofileallcutterstothespecifiedangles
and to the same length, as fast cutting can be
obtained only when all cutters are uniform.
WARNING:
Thesawchainisverysharp,alwayswearpro-
tectivegloveswhenperformingmaintenance
tothechaintopreventseriouspersonalinjury.
Properlytensionthechainpriortosharpening.
Refer to Chain Tension section earlier in this
manual.Doallofyourfilingatthemid-pointof
the bar.
Usea5/32in.diameterroundfileandholder.
Keepthefilelevelwiththetopplateofthetooth.
Donotletthefilediporrock.
Usinglightbutfirmpressure,stroketowards
the front corner of the tooth.
Lift file away from the steel on each return
stroke.
Putafewfirmstrokesoneverytooth.Fileall
lefthandcuttersinonedirection.Thenmove
to the other side and file the right hand cutters
intheoppositedirection.
Removefilingsfromthefilewithawirebrush.
